In 1971, before the election, Nixon and the GOP were able to shut down the Senate Banking Committee’s investigation into the hush payments from CREEP to the burglars.

In 1972-73, Congress ran investigations with subpoena power. And those investigations discovered crimes and got the president impeached.


(As a side note, if Watergate happened today, the GOP hush money payments would come from dark money from GOP billionaires. And we would never know. That’s why we must pass laws reversing most of Cit U and get dark money out of our politics.)

Let me begin by saying I'm ignorant about how these things work, but surely, of the 42%, a fine % of them could be convinced of how important their one vote is and could be moved enough by current political realities to go out and vote?
