For some, replacing a lampshade or changing a lightbulb counts as renovation.

For others, what my aunt did to a place she bought once is renovation: The only thing that remained inside were the outside walls. The two floors and attic were gone, the roof was gone, and the place got a split 2/3 floor plan and new everything except the outside.

I'm guessing that if you ripped out drywall and the ceiling, you'd have to put in a sprinkler system. But if you merely put down new carpet, well, for a sprinkler system you'd have to rip out the drywall and ceiling. Unless you did it like one classroom building I had classes in did, hang the pipes an inch or two belong the ceiling and run them on the outside of the walls.
