Trump Tower didn't have any sort of alarm system to warn residents, or even text alerts

and the front desk wasn't answering calls from residents.

But Michael Cohen texted a friend of his there to warn him to get out.

Tweet from Josh Marshall

referring to this section of a NY Times story:

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/07/nyregion/trump-tower-fire.html

She said that she did not get any announcement about leaving, and that when she called the front desk no one answered.

Dennis Shields, a resident who said he lived on the 42nd floor, described the scene.

“You could smell the smoke and you could hear things falling like through the vents,” he said. “It just smelled like sulfur.”

He said there were no orders to evacuate but he received a text message from Mr. Trump’s lawyer, Michael D. Cohen.

Mr. Shields, who said he grew up with Mr. Cohen, continued: “He said, ‘Are you in the building?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘You better get out ASAP.’ That’s how I knew to get out, otherwise I’d still be in there.”

It sounds like they're lucky a lot of people weren't incinerated. I hope NYC throws the book at them for whatever codes they violated.

to even be able to sell their units now that the world knows this.

trump's going to have to spend some money now to install sprinklers as repairing the damage will be a major alteration and thus require sprinklers to bring it up to code.

The banks here won't lend him money.

Wonder where he's going to get it?

But as the OP pointed out, fixing the fire damage should be a major renovation, which should void the Guiliani exception and require installation of sprinklers.

A finance firm run by Bethenny Frankel’s boyfriend is among a host of companies that cost taxpayers millions of dollars a year by encouraging questionable lawsuits against the Big Apple with the promise of quick cash advances.

snip

Brooklyn-based LawCash — whose CEO, Dennis Shields, reconciled with Frankel last year — and its rivals make money by advancing plaintiffs a portion of their potential proceeds and charging hefty interest fees when it’s repaid.

Court papers allege that LawCash, which boasts of having provided “thousands of clients with lawsuit funding advances,” has charged its clients interest rates as high as 124 percent.

That’s nearly five times the 25 percent limit set by New York state, which outlaws rates any higher under the “criminal usury” law.

Yep, sounds like litigation heaven, and right up the Vohen/Trump/Sater alley, eh??

1,500 square foot, two bedroom dump in Trump's fire trap? Sounds like some money laundering was going on there! I know it's expensive to live in NYC, but that seems WAY over the top to me.

Compromised construction to allow a fire to spread.

Trump Tower fire is second 2018 blaze in sprinkler-free residential tower
Share Tweet Reddit Flipboard Email
Last Updated Apr 8, 2018 7:30 AM EDT

The fire on the 50th floor New York City's Trump Tower that left 67-year-old Todd Brassner dead and six firefighters injured was the second fire in the building in 2018. President Trump's centerpiece Manhattan skyscraper opened in 1984, but does not have sprinklers on its residential floors, a measure required in new buildings since 1999. President Trump, then a private citizen and property developer, lobbied to try and prevent the mandate at the time.

New York City in 1999 became last big city in the nation to require sprinklers, according to the New York Daily News. Under the 1999 legislation, buildings constructed before then were only required to have sprinklers if they underwent gut renovations.

According to The New York Times, Mr. Trump was one of the developers in the late 1990s who lobbied against sprinklers in buildings. He then recanted once the legislation passed with grandfathering provisions that meant existing buildings did not need to install them, saying that he understood they made residents "feel safer." FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said on Saturday that there is extra fire protection at Trump Tower when Mr. Trump is there.
