The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe won a significant victory today in its fight to protect the Tribes drinking water and ancestral lands from the Dakota Access pipeline.
A federal judge ruled that the federal permits authorizing the pipeline to cross the Missouri River just upstream of the Standing Rock reservation, which were hastily issued by the Trump administration just days after the inauguration, violated the law in certain critical respects.
This is a major victory for the Tribe and we commend the courts for upholding the law and doing the right thing, said Standing Rock Sioux Chairman Dave Archambault II in a recent statement. The previous administration painstakingly considered the impacts of this pipeline, and President Trump hastily dismissed these careful environmental considerations in favor of political and personal interests. We applaud the courts for protecting our laws and regulations from undue political influence and will ask the Court to shut down pipeline operations immediately.

(58,785 posts)and even screen media, including evening news, covered it for a very long time. People climbing through fences and getting repelled by hired guards with dogs made the drama that sells, men in tribal costume on horses make great visuals, and people from 500 tribes gathering to fight nasty old big oil continued to develop a great story.
Of course, when it moved to the courts it dropped off the evening news. That is when people who CARED enough to follow moved to written coverage in the MSM as the conflict progressed.
This, for instance, was in the WaPo's energy and environment section 2 days ago: Dakota Access pipeline developer submits spill response plan https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/energy-environment/dakota-access-pipeline-developer-submits-spill-response-plan/2018/04/06/6619857e-39db-11e8-af3c-2123715f78df_story.html?utm_term=.cdc9a02b49ca
This from March 1 points out how these peoples' problems are exploited by trolls: These provocative images show Russian trolls sought to inflame debate over climate change, fracking and Dakota pipeline https://www.google.com/search?q=Russian+trolls+Dakota+Access+Pipeline&rlz=1C1AWFA_enUS760US760&oq=Russian+trolls+Dakota+Access+Pipeline&aqs=chrome..69i57.6117j0j1&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
Enjoy. If you want another, let me know.

(4,940 posts)Oh, and the horses weren't just great visuals, nor were those awesome guys in tribal dress, although , come to think of it, the make a drool-worthy one! Friends from up here joined the 500 tribes. The horses get you all over the place without having to run the Big Oil 👿goon gauntlet, or piss off the cops👮.
Valery, Leo - you both have a TON to be proud off, and I for one think Val should bead a bunch of victory earrings!
Chief Faith, your fortitude (yep, same friends ratted you out) is the glue. Thank you.
Damn, I'm wordy - I AM SO DAMNED HAPPY for the first time in a year.🌋🌅 🌋See, y'all, we CAN WIN!!!!

(58,785 posts)A victory as this makes its way through the courts is encouraging. And on this issue -- of course!
I didn't mean the horses weren't useful, but I'd never insult your friends and theirs by assuming they had no idea that horses and headdresses might win them precious coverage on the TV evening news. Those little layers of news jam between slabs of advertisement bread are, after all, the main news source for many millions.
Btw, for anyone who's interested, here's an article that takes a bigger view of this fight, in the context of new indigenous movements around the world.
Everywhere, their land and cultures are under attack. But the Standing Rock Sioux protesters were unique, since their struggle protecting their land and waterways against the Dakota Access Pipeline, captured international attention. The attack dogs set upon them were viewed by millions, as were the armed soldiers and police in riot gear who cleared their camp. So was police use of water cannons in freezing weather. But this concerted counterattack did not banish this indigenous movement; on the contrary, the water protesters gained the publics sympathy, as millions of horrified viewers witnessed their abuse.
http://prospect.org/article/why-new-social-movements-are-different
Media coverage that gained very widespread sympathy was unique, but somehow I really doubt the extremely stupid handling by the pipeline owner and contractors was.

(4,940 posts)Because you're 100% right. Great visuals = good coverage (I'm tempted to remember "if it bleeds, it leads).
I grant it was extremely cool to be able to keep up, especially when there was a media lull!
The article, BTW, is excellent.

(302 posts)Democracy Now was the only news program covering the Dakota Access Pipeline protests from the beginning and they did this for 6 months before the main stream media picked up on it. After the November 2016 election the MSM began covering it. Laurence O'Donnell on MSNBC actually said that they were busy covering the election and only after could they spare the people to cover the pipeline protests even though a lot was happening. They didn't even report it when Amy Goodman of Democracy Now was arrested while covering it and and charged with inciting a riot (a judge threw it out of court). The MSM was finally there when the police invented crimes the Dokata tribe had supposedly committed and banned drones from flying over photographing the police attacks on the tribe.

(7,725 posts)I'm reminded of a line from "Parenthood" about life being a roller-coaster. I'm not a fan of roller coasters. (I'm too old, BUT..)
Something tells me (late on sat. night, when I'm glowing), that there's going to be citizens, rallying in the streets like Times Square after the end of WW2, when this group is finally run out of the Peoples House. Teachers are pushing back hard, and leading by example. Young people are being heard. The Courts are doing justice...and a righteous "tipping point' is on the horizon. The electorate is coiled like a compressed spring. We are 'Canned Heat', and Brother it's cold outside.
Let's get fired up. Get ready to roll, and may God help them if they think nastiness and fear is going to stop us. This is unacceptable and unsustainable. This isn't how it ends for 300+ million people. He thinks we are going to fold under pressure. Are we?
Listen....Monday morning will come. With it another depressing and disappointing week, BUT, no one can say that Americans didn't win the war for the world, and advance civilization right here at home, when this fiasco is over. Make these two long awful years turn out.
We are in the fight of our lives right here, fighting the 'Enemy Within'. We're on the inside looking out. Put on your helmets. Sharpen your spurs. We're in the trenches waiting for the whistle to go over the top, and Brethren we will. Righteousness must prevail.
Water the tree we shall!
Register your children. Get ready to vote. If good news comes before that day, then we're all that much further ahead. We're making social sausage, and will look back one day and tell the story of it. Mueller will be our next Supreme Court Justice, and the promise of America, will shed it's grace on all of us once again. The 99%.
Their, and our, days coming. Let's keep our heads together and sally forth bravely. The tides turning.

Maybe some brilliant atty will find a way to make Neil Gorsuch (ugh), invalid...Id take a truly fair and evenhanded man like Mr Mueller to him in a heartbeat. Today was a big day. Roll tide.

(26,748 posts)Since the article is almost a year old and the court has only handed them loses since then (e.g., the company only has to go back and perform the environmental study that they should have done last year... and the tribe lost their request to keep the oil from flowing until it is completed).

(11,564 posts)The reason the pipeline was taking that route is because white people upriver didn't want it near them. Maybe it was just coincidence, though.

(1,832 posts)Please stay awake, check your sources and don't just accept all the "news", you are being fed!
All this "news source" Click For Check does is re-posting old news to cheat customers to visit. I checked a handfull of their stories, and all of them was either very old or simply false.
Just like the one about "Court Finds for Standing Rock Sioux; Against Dakota Pipeline", which was true - but from last year.
