TALLAHASSEE As a political outsider and later an unpopular incumbent, Rick Scott beat the odds and got elected then re-elected as Floridas governor, spending $86 million of his familys money in elections when Republicans did well nationwide.
Fast forward to 2018 and Scott on Monday in Orlando looks ready to roll the dice again.
But this time he is expected to announce his challenge to three-term Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson at a time Republicans are struggling with the burden of a polarizing President Donald Trump.
Scott has a record he can run on, his popularity numbers are up, for him, and hell have plenty of money to spend, said Rick Wilson, a Tallahassee Republican consultant and prominent talk show critic of Trump, whose book, Everything Trump Touches, Dies, is due out in August.
Scott can win, if he can manage the Trump thing. But Im not sure anyone can do that, he added.
The governor endorsed Trump and was publicly encouraged last September by the president to run for the Senate seat. Scott also raised money for candidate Trump through the New Republican PAC he chairs that now stands ready to fuel the campaign launching this week.
Both major parties and their allies are certain to pour millions of dollars into Floridas U.S. Senate contest, making it already listed among a half-dozen toss-up campaigns that will help determine whether Republicans maintain control of the chamber next year.
For 2018, this is the heavyweight bout for both parties, said state Rep. Evan Jenne, D-Dania Beach. In Florida, its also going to affect every other race on the ballot, from governor down to legislative races.

(4,429 posts)I think we need to be very careful about this race. He can win. Nationally, we need to do all we can to support Nelson.

(99,710 posts)He barely beat Charlie Crist by 1% in 2014 for governor in a year that that favored the GOP. He is going against a blue wave this time.

I can't wait to vote against him again

(14,565 posts)He narrowly defeated her despite a huge national tide in favor of his party. Scott had no chance either time if the terrain had been balanced.
This time Scott is more popular than those years but the slant is heavily reversed and he is facing an incumbent. Advantage Nelson but not a race we can take for granted.
It's all about independents, not turnout. The energy and turnout advantage in a fully focused and funded midterm will not resemble the edge we've enjoyed in the special elections. As always, big picture logic above details and Happy Adjustment. But if independents continue to oppose Trump, Nelson should prevail.

(99,710 posts)We Florida Dems will have to go all out to reelect Nelson. Scott has pots of money and the R and state apparatus behind him.

(14,167 posts)and pony up the $$$.
Scott has the resources, the clout, and (now that he's signed a piece of gun legislation) a way of insulating him from our strongest line of attack.
He's dangerous and the Republicans' best chance to take that seat.
We have to stand by Nelson. Maybe a couple of friendly PACs can put together some ads reminding Florida of Scott's true record as governor.

(58,908 posts)This is definitely a high-roller contest and I dont think my $20 will make a difference.

(14,167 posts)I spent a bit extra on Lamb's candidacy, and don't have a lot to donate to other contests, but it was money well-spent.
Nelson and Donnelly are going to be all-hands-on-deck races, IMO.

(99,710 posts)The downside is we will have to spend $$$$ on this race that can be better spent somewhere else. The upside is we get to whup Rick Scott's crooked ass.

(3,181 posts)Scott is popular among Puerto Ricans in FL and in the Island because of the hurricane relief efforts. Sen. Nelson lacks the recognition among our community, to be completely honest.
