Few Republicans in Washington are willing to go head-to-head with President Trump, but there is one band of GOP members willing to stand up to the leader of their own party: lawmakers who have announced their retirements.
While its not uncommon for members to feel far more liberated on their way out the door, it has taken on a whole new meaning in the Trump era, where lawmakers are confronted daily by a never-ending stream of White House controversies.
The GOPs retirement caucus has provided some of the most biting commentary on the president in recent months, with Rep. Ryan Costello (Pa.) the latest Republican to jump ship from Congress even saying that his frustrations with the Trump administration helped drive him to the exit.
"I always thought I was freewheeling, but I think I've become a little bit more freewheeling," Costello told The Hill, discussing how his attitude has already shifted in the nearly two weeks since he announced his retirement. "It's a little bit less stressful."
There has been a wave of GOP retirements over the last several months, as Republican members are bracing for tough midterm elections this November. About two dozen House Republicans are retiring outright, while four GOP senators have decided to call it quits.
Members have cited a mix of reasons for deciding to leave Congress, from expiring chairmanship terms to family and personal reasons.
But some lawmakers have pointed to another factor: Trump. They say that the unconventional, freewheeling president has added new headaches to an already demanding job.

(2,769 posts)has ripped that flimsy mask of "respectability" off that gaggle of thieves, thugs, flunkies and madmen Signaling the end of the non-stop feeding frenzy at the dark money trough for many republicans and maybe the entire party as a whole this coming November.
The Republicans don't have a spine, balls, guts or anything else that generates courage. For them to come out now play acting at responsibility just sickens me. Infact I'd rather they just slunk away like the rotten dogs they are rather than disrespect the ENTIRE country with feigned concern about the direction of this country.

It doesn't matter if the critters have been in the house for 4-12+ year, in the senate for 10+++ years. They've all banked millions of dollars outside of their federally-reported benefits.
Some of the more useful will be given speaking positions in the NewMedia empire. Sinclair/MerceNet/KochBro. A few 10K per appearance will keep the mistresses/masteresses happy.

(23,957 posts)this is how the media will give us Trump's second term
winning the house in 2018 is a matter of survival. Trump must be investigated and impeached on grounds so obvious that even the morally vacant GOP senate will have to vote for removal. else, the media will normalize and lionize him as "The People's President" or some such manure.

(3,275 posts)Republicans, please retire from office. You can finally say what you want about the orange monster and his putrid administration. You won't have to pretend that the horrible things he says and does are okay. You also won't have to go through a depressing and costly defeat in November by the blue wave of democrats.

They share culpability for every vote undermining our institutions and protections. They need to make amends. It would be a small start, but better than just talking the talk and being hypocrites
Not a likely outcome but maybe somebody has a conscience fighting like hell to escape its cranial prison
