‘Take that down!’: Watch Fox host Howard Kurtz panic after graphic shows Fox News is least trusted network

In what was undoubtedly a painful moment on Fox News this morning, media analyst Howard Kurtz frantically implored his producer to take down a graphic that showed Fox is the least trusted of the big three cable networks.

Speaking with pollster Frank Luntz about Donald Trump’s Twitter habits, with Luntz calling the president’s use of “fake news” detrimental to his cause, Kurtz brought up a recent poll from Monmouth University on news trustworthiness.

That is when things took a hilarious turn.

“Speaking of fake news, there is a new poll out from Monmouth University.’Do the media report fake news regularly or occasionally?’ 77 percent say yes,” Kurtz exclaimed before noticing the graphic instead showed “Who do you trust more?” with CNN at 48 percent, MSNBC at 45 percent and Fox News bring up the rear at 30 percent.

It is a poll asking: Who do you trust more, Network X or Donald Trump?

For Fox, the most common answer was "Trust Both Equally".

You’re distorting the statistics they show.

While your statement is literally correct it is for practical purposes false. Yes, that’s what the poll showed.

But the OP is right. Since the total of each row also declined, with Fox’s row lowest, the OPs statement is correct.

Fox is the least trusted network. Correct. Supported by this poll.

Also. It's a monmouth poll: https://www.monmouth.edu/polling-institute/reports/monmouthpoll_us_040218/

Check this data on Fox:

Donald Trump and Fox News
March2018 March2017
Trust Trump more 20% 17%
Trust Fox News more 30% 37%
Trust both equally 37% 36%
(VOL) Don’t know 13% 10%
(n) (803) (801)

So Fox trust went down seven points. Now at 30%. And "equally" went up by 1. So at least a 6% shift.

The graphic is in response to the question: "Do you trust "MSNBC/CNN/Fox" more or Trump more?"

In the case of MSNBC and CNN - people trust the network more than Trump.

In the case of Fox - people trust Fox and Trump about the same amount

The question didn't ask: "Which of these networks do you trust the most?"

Edit to add link to the poll:

Graphic comes from Question 38.

There is no way to draw any comparison between the networks based on the question.

The question asks which do you trust more: Trump v. Network (not Network A v. Network B).

I would answer that I trust Fox news and Trump equally - i.e. not at all. A trump supporter would likely answer the exact same way, but for a very different reason: 100% trust in both.

All the responses can do is compare Trump v. Network. It cannot compare network v. network for the reason I suggested: Both people in touch with reality and those who live in Trump-World will answer the exact same way as to the Fox v. Trump question.

Fox = Fox News

MSNBC - The Place For Politics

There is truth in advertising. MSNBC does not do news, they focus on politics, There is no bias when you tell the truth.

Now that would be a new concept at Fox, sorry Shep.

America is better informed on Fox bullshit since tRump call attention to it on a daily basis. We can see the manipulation where normally nobody would pay attention.

It does the same thing they do every day. Misrepresents.

I watched the video.

The host didn't 'panic' the first time the graphic got thrown up there. He acknowledged that it was the wrong graphic, and then said 'please take that down'. Then, later in the video, they actually do put that graphic up intentionally (they wouldn't have made the damn thing, if they didn't intend to use it).

FOX news is shit, but we shouldn't have to make stuff up about them to prove it.

They are each being compared to Trump in terms of reliability - not to each other.

This is the question:

38. I’m going to read you some names of information sources. For each pair of names I read,
please tell me which one you trust more as a source of information, or whether you trust both
sources about equally

Donald Trump and CNN

Trust CNN more 48%
Trust both equally 13%

Donald Trump and Fox News

They use a red box to highlight the three network numbers, which as you correctly indicate, should not be directly compared to each other. I didn't see the later portion of the broadcast where they apparently did intentionally use that graphic... I wonder how that red box related to that piece.

He's a media guy. I know it's for Faux, but why would he care about what graphic goes up?

And, this is kind of a stupid question. It seems there is no value to even knowing the answer to a question that is comparing apples to oranges and then displaying it as if we're comparing cars?

It's totally mixed up and nonsensical.
