Michigan's Recovery Outpaces Rest Of U.S.

Michigan fell the hardest during the recession, but it's bouncing back better than the rest of the country.

While economic uncertainty in Europe is creating a cloud over the U.S. economy, and the state's unemployment rate has ticked up two-tenths of a percentage point to 8.6 percent in the past two months, existing home sales and retail sales in Michigan are doing better than elsewhere in the country.

"We've been telling our clients since late 2011 that Michigan is turning the corner faster economically than any other state in the country," said Patrick Anderson, founder and CEO of the East Lansing-based consulting firm Anderson Economic Group.

Home sales are up 10 percent through June in the Great Lakes State compared with the nation's 5 percent growth rate, according to the National Association of Realtors. And the state's retail sales surged in April and May, while the national figure fell 0.2 percent.

1. I've owned a pizzeria for the past 18 years and it has never been busier.
2. I am also a special ed teacher and can assert that we had very, very few pink slips this past year. Generally implies that families are not moving away and student body is stabilizing.

Improvement. You Bet!

I'm not against throwing some business your way (assuming you are in the area).

I've been a Hungry Howies franchisee for 18 years. Started when I was a young man. Now I'm staring at 50 and teaching is not nearly as physically demanding on my frame so that gets the majority of my attentions. Pizzashop is in West Bloomfield so not very practical for you. However you would have been my guest and been given a tour and a chance to make your own pie. The tour is even better if you bring your kids, too!!

Maybe some day!

Regards,
-dave

I have a degree in culinary arts from the C.I.A. in Hyde Park NY.

I have already made enough pies to last me a lifetime. Even spent a little time working in a Pizza Hut 25 or 30 years ago.

Thanks for the offer but I'll pass.

Unemployment is still AWFUL in Michigan.

And the Obama team should do a check of where else in the US GM has a sizeable presence. GM has been in nearly every midwest state, Tennessee and I believe Texas.

Don't forget big GM suppliers. They can be outside Michigan as well, and they are all happy to be supplying GM.

I don't have friends out of work searching desperately for jobs and having to sell their houses at huge losses anymore.
