In Rome the scaffolds
of the restoration
form an exoskeleton
around inveterate ruins,
as if this site eternal were
reverting to invertebrate.

Scaffolded spectators
peer through wire rims
(shocked to the marrow,
thinking past sins)
at skulls and femurs
of dead Capuchins.
