If the "Blue Wave" happens in November and we take back both houses; where do we get 67 votes in the Senate to convict?
Edit: November not December.

Yeah, the Founders done screwed up on the stupid decision to not allow a President to be indicted.
I see no way the republicans vote him out. They have sold their soul already.

(108,978 posts)but we need a 2/3 vote in the Senate for conviction.

(11,949 posts)That is just what I meant.
And at this point I think impeachment with no chance of conviction would be an epic mistake politically. My opinion may change depending on what Mueller finds.

(26,044 posts)Even if Democrats were to "run the table" in November, theyd still need 9 or more Republicans to convict. And thats not going to happen
right now.
Come mid-November, things may well have changed. Right now, Republicans in the Senate fear being primaried more than facing a Democratic opponent in the general. But, after this autumns election, things may be quite different, especially in light of a mid-term bloodbath. The electoral map isnt anywhere near as favorable for the GOP in 2020 as it is in 2018, and, if they lose ground even so this year, there may be a bunch of Republicans in unsafe seats who might start dreading facing the voters in two years if seen as Trump-enablers, particularly if it means running with him at the head of the ticket. In 1974, it was regarded as a foregone conclusion that Nixon would be able to retain enough Senate loyalists to keep him in power
until the dam broke and Republicans realized their OWN jobs might be put in jeopardy then, they couldnt get away from him fast enough.

If by some miracle we could win back the House, we might stand a chance of getting rid of Trump. Getting rid of Pence first would be optimal. God only knows what Mueller is finding out about Mr Handmaid's Tale, but since Paul Manafort himself selected Pence, there has to be something.
So here we are at this moment: the handpicked Cabinet will not declare him unfit, the Republican-majority House will not impeach, and the Republican-majority Senate will not convict.
GOTV and keep praying that Mueller turns over every rock. He's doing great at decentralizing the information, so even if he gets fired the work can be carried on by others elsewhere. Many of Trump's closest associates, even his family, are in mortal danger, and there will be prison and ruination for them.

(23,340 posts)Trump is driven by the last person to talk to him, he's chaotic.
Pence is driven by ideology, more committed to "conservative values", more relentless.
Yeah, I'd rather have Trump. Really.
