I have a serious question about "Facebook ads"

This may sound stupid but...

I've posted before about both not knowing that the little blue button on the bottom left that takes you back up to top was the "News Feed" mainly because the idea of getting "News" from Facebook is absurd.

What ads are on Facebook? I don't see any ads when I'm on Facebook.
I only go to Facebook via the app on an iPhone or iPad. I'm not even sure if I remember what my password is.

Do ads appear on other devices like Microsoft?
Do ads appear for people who actually log on with a password?

1. Do you have an adblocker?

If you do, that probably eliminates them. I don't, and they appear on the right side of the page for me.

2. If you don't have an adblocker, they appear in the right-hand column. However, adblockers do not

keep you from seeing sponsored posts from things your friends like within your feed.

3. People don't understand Facebook advertising.

There are quite a few forms of advertising on Facebook - the little sidebar ads that appear on some computer screens are just one part.

Just having a Facebook page is advertisement - as is every post or share to that page.

Another approach is the paid, "Boost Post" feature - this puts your posts in the feeds of Friends of people who liked your page - not just the people who liked it. I think these are usually labeled in grey as "Sponsored"

We use this all the time in some of the businesses I do PR for - it is quite powerful - you'd be surprised how much bang for your buck you get for a 20 dollar boost. A post that might only be seen by a few hundred people - might now reach a few thousand!

They give you plenty of options to target various demographics.

On top of that - they give you some pretty serious statistical analysis with it.

Im not a fan of FB - but have to know how it works professionally.

Its pretty damn powerful.

We don't do ads.

But it is interesting how all of sudden when you have a "page" instead of just an account, all of a sudden you get a bunch of promotional offers.

5. The outreach to businesses and pages has recently upticked

Wasn't always like that. The features were there - but they weren't really pushing it too much.

Now they seem to push these things under the guise of "guidance" - and some of it does seem to be attempts to let you know what you can do with the system - albeit self-serving.

Ads will look just like posts, but will say “sponsored” in small letters.

Have you seen things like a post from a page that also say “Joe Smith, Jane Doe and 5 other friend of your like Acme Rope Sales”- those are paid ads to get you to also like that page.

They are there.

9. Okay yes I have seen those

These must be ads that have bought a "boost" as described in a post above.

I just don't see any ads on the side as many people apparently do.

11. Some it is actually keyed to screen size...

On a computer - if you set you screen text really big or have lower res screen - the list of friends on the right will disappear/minimize - same with the right side bar ads.

And I don't think these ads show on mobile at all.

12. A lot depends on settings - sometimes an ad will be merely that your friends liked something.

You see that Joe like Wal-Mart - that's an ad.

Or that Joe and Sally liked Black Lives Matter...that's an ad.
