i think he was hoping to save it for September to maximize midterm election impact, but he needs popular support when he fires Mueller this summer, and a war is the quickest way to get it. May just became a very scary month.

i think what happens is he launches his war, the media goes all-in for him like they did for W after 9/11, he has his military parade and for a week or two he breaks 50% approval as the "gotta support wartime president" circuit activates. then, after a month or so, it's right back where it is now but in the meantime Dennison's gotten well into the sausage works for firing Mueller. but he fucks that up too, his popularity peaks a couple months early, and people are pissed as hell at him right before the midterms.
