The House is in recess more than half the year. Congress people and senators spend more time home than anyone I know.

(52,229 posts)counting as "work" all the time they spend outside of congress trying to get re-elected, i.e., schmoozing with constituents, lobbyists, donors; doing local public events, giving interviews, making ads, etc.
in any case it's all time away from family.
certainly a speaker has to have an even tougher workload.
that said, much of that up to the congressperson and how badly they want re-election and how tough it is to get that. they certainly *could* treat it as a very cushy job that allows a ton of family time. they just aren't so likely to get re-elected unless they're a very well-established incumbent in a safe district/state.
