Why would anyone shell out 30K for a friend to squelch a lie?

People don't pay 30K to keep someone from telling an easily provable lie.

We will find out soon enough it’s true.

I was blackmailed once in my life, the blackmailer was mostly telling the truth. I decided to tell the truth myself instead but if the blackmailer were lying, then I could have told him to take a hike.
