(9,426 posts)They do nothing for citizens, line their pockets with "donations" to fulfill the wishes of the rich, then retire with a pension from the people they have ignored for years. Also, with great healthcare for the entire family.

(3,256 posts)I don't know where the nonsense about congressional pensions started, but it seems to have became a belief clear across the interest. The federal pension is 1% of your high five times years of service. It is mostly funded through a payroll deduction. To be eligible you must meet the rule of a total of years of service plus age reaching 85. The only thing Congress critters get that is different is that they are vested after 2 years rather than five, which I have no problem with, since it's a temp job. The real money is in what you do after leaving. Corporate board seats pay a lot for doing little. Think tanks pay even more and lobbying is the jackpot, I have read that Paul Ryan is a multimillionaire on a Congressman's pay. Speaking fees, I suppose. Book deals can bring in a bundle. I have no idea how you stop what is obvious bribery by corporate America. The last Republican senator we ousted in my state got a million a year job in DC with an Israeli outfit and on it goes. Personally, I would like to see a ban on taking corporate board seats, think tank jobs and lobbying for at least five years, but I know this is probably unconstitutional.
The rewards for pro business politicians is what keeps the game going. If you are a liberal and pro consumer your job opportunities are a lot more limited, but there are almost as many Democrats serving on corporate boards as Republicans.

(26,621 posts)and, compared to the huge majority of Americans, very generous. I have no problem with federal employees getting pensions, in fact I think everyone should, but Congress critters do quite well for themselves.

(2,690 posts)Remember Eric Cantor, the other "wunderkinder" who got kicked out by Virginia voters who thought he was too liberal? He went on to a $3,000,000 a year job on Wall Street. I imagine little boy biceps will do the same.
But about that pension: he likely won't receive one. Congresscritters who were elected before 2003 had the option of signing up for a Federal pension or just selling their souls to corporate industry. Most choose the latter. But even had Ryan signed up for Federal retirement bennies, he most likely would not have been eligible for a pension equal to 50% of his salary. Per the Congressional Research Service report on Congressional pensions:
"There were 611 retired Members of Congress receiving federal pensions based fully or in part on their congressional service as of October 1, 2016. Of this number, 335 had retired under CSRS and were receiving an average annual pension of $74,028. A total of 276 Members had retired with service under FERS and were receiving an average annual pension of $41,076 in 2016."
If the granny starver had been covered by Federal retirement it would have been FERS, and his pension would be good -- about $55,000 -- but not $84,000.
He wouldn't have to struggle along with "only" $55,000 a year, of course, because his Social Security (assuming his fellow legislators don't sink it) ultimately will bring in another $30,000 a year, and his thrift savings plan account (TSP) could double that amount. Add that to a multi-million dollar Wall Street gig, and our boy-champion of mendacity should be able to live a life of heartless and conscience-free comfort despite the economic chaos he and his Party will have generated in the country.
