I don't know that, but my guess is that McDonald's started to get complaints about the "Sign" and sent a C&D for trademark infringement. For a number of reasons, I do not think that they would be able to win an infringement case in court, but it can cost a few hundred thousand dollars to defend against even a very bogus trademark lawsuit.
