(3,424 posts)I live right on top of the San Andreas, and I've said I feel much worse for the people who have to deal with tornadoes.

(34,111 posts)Tornado Watch for us too. Looking cloudy and the wind has finally slowed a bit, at least for now. 75 MPH in Eureka. Crazy windy earlier. Be safe over there

(34,111 posts)they head straight at us, we put up the animals and gather up the ones we can and then the storms go all around us as we remain dry. It is such an odd little area. It is all or nothing it seems. Looks like this is one of those times that it goes around us. What we were alerted for fell apart in the Southern part of the county South of us. Oh well, it is still really cool looking outside. I hope you get away with just some nice rain.

(18,868 posts)I think we are way low on moisture.
Storms are starting to fure up all over now.
Time to give the dogs their thunderstorm meds just in case.

(34,111 posts)It is so dry, nice two year break from the last drought but we are right in the middle of one again. I wanna go back to the days of my young adulthood when you pretty much knew when the seasons were and you always got those spring rains. *sigh*

(11,343 posts)Tornado watch here too. Be safe everybody!

(18,868 posts)They get the worst tornados there.
I have lived in KCMO since 1970 and have never seen a tornado. One went over my house at 2 in the morning once. I didn't know what it was at the time. It put down north of me.

(63,221 posts)They just terrify me. Do you go into the basement? How much time do you have once you realize you are in the path of one?
Stay safe!
leftyladyfrommo
(18,868 posts)I just watch radar.
Now if there is a warning I start to really pay attention. Not much
I can do. I don't have a basement and my house is really small. But these little houses have been here for almost 70 years and no touchdowns.
It is hilly where i live. Further north the land is a lot flatter and they do get hit once every few years. It is mainly just fasr touchdowns up there. They don't stay on the ground.
We are under a wstch now but there isn't anything close. The air is really oppressive though.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)Why is that? Just curious. Do a lot of people have storm cellars outside somewhere?
leftyladyfrommo
(18,868 posts)I think most if the newer houses have basements now.
RandomAccess
(5,210 posts)plenty of people have basements.
And while there's definitely a "tornado alley," it doesn't really cover all the midwest.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)West South Central part of the country that is mostly without basements, followed by the Pacific region, then east south central and south atlantic.
It lists a number of reasons for it, including bedrock and a high water table. See article here:

(4,723 posts)We have quite a few tornado watches every year in SW Missouri. If it is getting nasty outside, I turn on the weather to see what is going on.
