R. Lee Ermey, a Golden Globe-nominated actor best known for his role as Gunnery Sgt. Hartman in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket, has died.

Ermey, whose nickname was "The Gunny," died Sunday morning from complications of pneumonia. He was 74.

The news was announced via his official twitter account by his longtime manager, Bill Rogin, who wrote: "It is with deep sadness that I regret to inform you all that R. Lee Ermey ("The Gunny&quot passed away this morning from complications of pneumonia. He will be greatly missed by all of us. Semper Fi, Gunny. Godspeed."

But I think he was a national treasure

All politics aside he loved his country, who would you rather see with a gun in his hand?, R Lee Ermey or ted nugent?.

I don't know Ermeys political bent but I didn't care, when somebody said the word "Gunny" I knew who they were talking about.

And he was a really good actor even if he became a caricature of himself.

Like the opening of Saving Private Ryan, see it once, it stays with you forever.

The first time I saw Ermey it was as a helicopter pilot in Apocalypse Now.

Where they come in to destroy the village, flight of the Valkeries blaring away.

You can hear his voice as one of the chopper pilots.

He was always fun to watch.

Having been there in that era, I know. But I have mixed emotions due to his RW politics.

Semper Fi, Gunny.

"And when he gets to heaven, to St Peter he will tell,
Another Marine reporting, sir. I've spent my time in Hell."
