By Marie Solis On 4/15/18 at 2:43 PM
There may be more to come for former Senator Al Franken, who resigned his post in January after facing sexual misconduct allegations from multiple women.
At Sundays TimesTalk panel for women senators which featured Senators Susan Collins, Joni Ernst, Heidi Heitkamp and Amy Klobuchar Klobuchar said she expects her former colleague and friend to make a comeback.
Hes had two acts and hes still going to have a third, Klobuchar, a Democrat from Minnesota, told the crowd about Franken.
The Minnesota Democrat said shes stayed in touch with Franken, and spoke to him just this weekend.
Klobuchar didnt join the cohort of Democrats who called for Franken to step down in December, when a photo of Franken apparently grabbing a womans breasts resurfaced. The photo led to a landslide of accusations from women who said theyd been groped or otherwise harassed by the congressman, whod built a reputation partly based on his support for womens equality.

(102,283 posts)I'm not going to engage in the argument with those who STILL want to defend this travesty, but I hope Klobuchar is correct.

She probably recognized there was nothing to back up any of the allegations against Al Franken. She knows what evidence looks like, and saw none.

(10,168 posts)I didn't realize Dayton's term was up this cycle (2018). He can run for a 3rd term but has declined. I'm not sure that Al will jump in now, but I will hold out hope! That would be so exciting!

(58,785 posts)the general rule-of-thumb expectation for time out of office for politicians who'd lost office due to sex-related scandals.
The #MeToo movement may well change that voter dynamic somewhat, and the fact that Al is not fairly universally considered guilty, unlike the typical person who resigns, might be a factor either way (he's become a wedge issue for some ardent souls).
But, voters don't change that much, and I've always thought that with time Al could very likely be elected to office again if he chose to run.

(10,168 posts)and many, if not most, think it was a hit job. My evidence is anecdotal among the 30 something voters that my daughter went to college with at the University of Minnesota. They say they love him.

(30,481 posts)He could make a big splash creating a PAC, returning to SNL, continuing to put out books, etc. Lots of options open for Franken. Guys not dead.

(4,490 posts)He's very popular in his state, and (if he's up for it) voters should be given the chance to decide if he should be back in congress. He was self punished more than the likely rapist being supported by the majority of congress.
