Despite the sizzling stock market, Americans remain cool to the idea of having direct exposure to the companies benefiting from the economic recovery.

According to new stats from the Federal Reserve, just 13.8% of U.S. families held any individual stocks like Apple (AAPL) or Microsoft (MSFT) as of 2013. That's down from nearly 18% in 2007 before the market meltdown.

"After experiencing severe losses in 2007 and 2008, investors with smaller portfolios have become more cautious," said Lena Haas, senior vice president of retirement, investing and savings at E*Trade Financial (ETFC).

While less than 14% of families directly held stocks in 2013, 30% of households own at least one cat, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Ownership has fallen after the crash since before crash the number was about 62%.

Polls and analyses indicate only about 15% directly own stocks while most of Americans with stock investments just have small amounts in 401 type accounts.

he may be closer to the truth than you think. Pensions and annuities are based on investments in the stock market. I owned no stocks but my 401k is based on stocks.

by that count I am a stock holder (my state plan) but otherwise I am not. I don't know if even using that his figure is correct but it is higher than those who own individual stock.

63% Of Americans Don't Have Enough Savings To Cover A $500 Emergency

“The car brakes go on the fritz. The refrigerator stops refrigerating. The dog gets his paws on a batch of chocolate chip cookies and earns himself a trip to the vet ER.

These are just three of any number of things that could go wrong during the course of the year. Recovering from any one will set you back about $500, which means these scenarios fall closer to the "undesirable inconvenience" category than they do the "massive calamity" one. And yet, nearly two-thirds of Americans do not have enough money in savings to cover the cost of a single one of these unplanned expenses.

According to a brand new survey from Bankrate.com, just 37% of Americans have enough savings to pay for a $500 or $1,000 emergency. The other 63% would have to resort to measures like cutting back spending in other areas (23%), charging to a credit card (15%) or borrowing funds from friends and family (15%) in order to meet the cost of the unexpected event.”

12. Republicans will lie about everything, even when its so easily disproved.

Schlapp is used to speaking to Republican audiences who are so gullible and uninformed that they will believe anything that comes from someone on their side. Republican voters want to be petted and fed candy, and told how smart they are for backing Trump. They won't factcheck these obvious lies because they don't want to know they're skipping down the primrose path on the way to the spider's lair.
