But you would not believe the number of people who have bought me beers in bars thinking it did.

Attorney-Client privilege attaches when a person reasonably thinks that you are their lawyer. No contract needed, no money need be exchanged.

For any aspiring lawyers out there, (please go into another field, you will thank me), that is the answer to a question on the multi-state ethics exam.
