Jennifer Rubin has become a leading voice for a group of conservative intellectuals who dont fit comfortably in either political partyand sees the party she left behind as immoral and anti-American.
Hours after Paul Ryan announced his retirement last week, President Donald Trump tweeted a photo of the House speaker and the rest of the GOP congressional leadership at dinner together at the White House. All did the traditional Trump-style smiling thumbs-upa big show of unity to rebut anxiety about the party collapsing.
What Jennifer Rubin saw while looking at that photo: a Republican Party that has become the caricature the left always said it wasthe party of old white men. And that has become more so in the age of Donald Trump, when he is actively courting and stoking white resentment.
Trumps use of identity politics, Rubin told me in an interview for the latest episode of POLITICOs Off Message podcast, is a dead end for the party. Its a dead end because its immoral and anti-American to base an entire political movement on one racial group and its a dead end because thats not America and [what America] is becoming.

(14,566 posts)Is the more true reality - don't make it about us.
This is a about how fucking sick, twisted and vile the conservative movement is.

(14,492 posts)all I ever heard or saw out of the GOP on TV news was Bob Dole bitching about spending and taxes. Back then (in TN), the only people who identified as Republican were wealthy white folks, mainly because they hated progressive taxation. It really has not changed in substance to this day.

(14,492 posts)It's much clearer now that I can look back and reflect.
That's what old age does for me, I guess... ....

(9,527 posts)Look at how many Republicans voted for the Civil Rights and Voting Rights acts then compared to how many try to make voting harder for minorities now.
Many Democrats voted it against those acts and then became Republicans as the Republican party embraced an anti-minority stance.
Likewise going further back, there were links between Democrats and the KKK (not the direct link some Republicans contend today, but more as a reflection of the KKK lashing out against the Republican party of Lincoln and voting for Democrats as the other party).
Fortunately as a party we've taken steps to become better.
Also previously there were Republicans that were more liberal than some Democrats. That hasn't been the case for a while.

(37,161 posts)...does not mean it just happened. What part of "enemy of normal Americans" sounded reasonable to you when Newt Gingrich used it a quarter century ago?
You know who turned the Party of Lincoln into the Party of Ahab? Your fellow conservatives.

(4,341 posts)it has been one for many years and its just now that you have come to realize it, maybe accept it.
Some republicans were in need of the extreme to accept something they should have accepted many years ago. Many would have realized it during Ronald Reagan, and after the Bushes things became clearer but they still refused to accept it, human nature I guess, but now with trump they cannot avoided, although it should have stopped with GW and trump should have never made it to the WH.
The sad thing is that there are still so man republikans who still refuse to see the light.

(56,828 posts)She's also smart enough to realize the GOP won't survive much longer as the party of only old white men.
for all of Bush's faults, he was good at finding people that were corrupt and incompetent no matter their race or gender - Colin Powell, Condi Rice, Alberto Gonzalez, Karen Huges, Elaine Chao (one of the few non white non males on Team Trump), Rod Paige and others. He had also nominated Harriet Miers for SCOTUS until she was forced to withdraw by right wingers.

(7,809 posts)Just what was NOT a caricature?
- The rethug so-called "moral majority" elected a Hollywood insider and former union head as their golden calf president.
- The "kinder, gentler country" was headed by Bush I who got elected with the help of Lee Atwater, Karl Rove, Newt Gingrich, Grover Norquist, and scores of others.
- 2 adulterers and a pedophile spearheaded the hate machine that went after Bill Clinton.
- Democratic candidates with military experience and the medals to prove it are called (to use a collective term) wimps by reichwing candidates that weaseled out of military service completely while supporting stupid and vicious military blunders the world over.
We all have our lists of outrages committed by the reichwing.
Is Rubin smart enough to dress herself?
