China's Commerce Ministry said Tuesday that customs officers will charge importers a fee of about 179% on US sorghum after an investigation found the shipments were unfairly subsidized and damaging Chinese producers.
Sorghum is a grain that is used to feed livestock and make a liquor that's very popular with Chinese drinkers.

China is the largest buyer of American sorghum products. Its imports of the crop were worth about $960 million last year, according to Chinese customs data.
The move is likely to stoke fears of a trade war between the United States and China. Tensions have risen sharply since the start of 2018, with both governments announcing plans to slap tariffs on major imports.

(58,785 posts)Kansas and Texas are by far the largest producers, followed by AR, NE, CO, OK, SD, MO, MS, and LA.
Hope the Dems use this to our advantage.

(58,785 posts)many are going to be hurt bad by this. Some who were already in trouble will very possibly be ruined, for sure slide farther into debt. Many tragedies.
Take a look at these ag census data for 2012:
family or individually operated, accounting for 57 percent of sales.
Partnerships (including family partnerships) were
14 percent of operations and 31 percent of sales. (Table 2)
https://www.agcensus.usda.gov/Publications/2012/Online_Resources/Highlights/Sorghum%20Farming/Sorghum_Farming.pdf
Corporate operations were only 9% of the total, producing 11% of U.S. sorghum.
The lesson on disastrously inept Republican policies is being delivered by China, but no doubt our Democratic candidates will be working hard to make sure it's understood. (No, Hillary didn't do it.)

(58,785 posts)Many farmers are in trouble because things like disappearing markets, increasing competition overseas and climate change making farming their land increasingly unprofitable. Plus, let's face it, if big ag had wanted to grow sorghum those statistics would be reversed.

There is no worse liquor. If youve never had baijiu, its a little like the worst generic vodka you can buy at Krogers, except topped off with lighter fluid. It makes moonshine seem like a fine wine.

(10,833 posts)US farmers who grow that grain will be willing to take the hit because . . . the Trumpster told us they would.
Everyone ultimately gets thrown under the bus because Everything Trump Touches Dies.

"Grain sorghum is the third most important cereal crop grown in the United States and the fifth most important cereal crop grown in the world. In 2010, Nigeria was the world's largest producer of grain sorghum, followed by the United States and India. In developed countries, and increasingly in developing countries such as India, the predominant use of sorghum is as fodder for poultry and cattle.[2][3] Leading exporters in 2010 were the United States, Australia and Argentina; Mexico was the largest importer of sorghum."
