The Washington Post reported late Sunday that President Trump has battled his top aides on Russia and lost.
Less than 20 hours later, Trump has now reversed U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley's announcement that the United States would be ramping up sanctions on Russia.
Hmm.
The sudden reversal of Haley's Sunday-morning announcement is hardly the only example of the right hand in the White House not always knowing what the left hand is up to. Trump often seems to be negotiating not just those around him but also with himself and has been unafraid of contradicting top aides and even Cabinet-level officials like Haley.
But on Russia and on an issue of such import, the quick reversal is stunning and relatively rare. There is no clear indication whether Haley or someone else is at fault, but as The Post's team notes, she has a tendency to clear her remarks with Trump personally before she makes them. It seems entirely possible that she got Trump to sign off on saying more Russia sanctions were coming on Sunday morning, and then the White House got cold feet (possibly because Trump suddenly felt the need to exert himself over the process).
A look back at Haley's remarks Sunday leaves little doubt that she appeared on CBS's Face the Nation with the clear purpose of announcing the sanctions. It was the second answer she provided, and she volunteered the information rather than being lured into saying something that perhaps wasn't ready for public consumption.
-
Those are very specific comments not only that sanctions are coming, but that Mnuchin would announce them within 24 hours or so. It's really difficult to believe Haley was just freelancing here and didn't get the go-ahead to announce something of such significance.

Wouldn't that be stunning! First female President - a Republican!

(22,037 posts)Nikki Haley is no one to be respectful of.
Further, the Republican Party will need to realign post-Trump. It is going to be in a shambles and Haley won't be their savior.

(22,037 posts)Lordy, that's a thought I didn't need!
By the way, I meant no disrespect in my response to you. It's simply that Haley is a bad person wrapped in an attractive package. And the Republicans won't nominate a woman for president until all of the old guard are long gone.
Enjoy your afternoon, leftie.

and sadly, like Dinesh D souza, or Ajit Pal, they will be reminded when it is convenient that the white america they changed themselves to become never wanted them, the folks they sucked up to had no use for talent or intelligence, because they would rather be raised by good old boys devoid of either.
Nimrata, take it from someone that was raised white and then had a few friends tell him otherwise in a damn rude manner; you will never be able to depend on or trust the GIOP, especially as they are very bust sheddign the old fake intellectual class in favor of the Ted Nugent class, the ones that would gladly hang you on the same tree as whatever black person got caught "driving while black" this week.

It seems to have worked for 'Ted' Cruz.
Rafael Cruz changed his nickname from 'Felito to Ted' and pretends his first name is not worthy of the white culture.
He ridiculed an opponent's nickname.

Funny that he never ridiculed 'Bobby' Jindal who named himself after a tv character to be more 'white'.

(31,519 posts)I'm sure that she didn't announce those sanctions on her own without having discussed it with the White House. Trump got cold feet about imposing sanctions on his buddy, Vlad, and decided to make Haley the scapegoat instead of taking the responsibility himself. That's the way he operates.

(82,849 posts)Her word in the UN is pretty worthless after the administration did a complete 180 on her after her appearance on the Sunday shows. Anything she says at the UN will be suspect until it's independently confirmed by the White House afterwards. I guess too much credibility was holding back America from being great, so we had to plug that right through the gizzard.

She is making noise (justified) but has much loftier ambitions that might be better served if she is not officially aligned with *45.
When Pence comes in, he will make her VP or Sec State.
She is getting strong PR with this latest snafu.

I would never vote for her. But Gomhert is my congressfool. So actually yeah I would vote in the GOP primary if she came and ran against goober and then for whichever Democrat would be that year's 3-1 beatdown victim. And Charlie Wilson was once my Congressman. A flawed but smart man and statesman.
