Tapper: You've suggested that Michael Cohen is going to flip...
Avenatti: No, I didn't "suggest" that. I stated it as a fact.
Mark Geragos said earlier today that you can check all the boxes on the likeliness of Cohen flipping.

(182,837 posts)Michael Cohen's bare-knuckled tactics earned him the nickname of "Tom," a reference to Tom Hagen, the consigliore to Mafia Don Vito Corleone in The Godfather. He grew up on Long Island, the son of a physician who survived the Holocaust in Poland, and like Tom Hagen spent a childhood around organized crime, specifically the Russian Mafiya. Cohen's uncle, Morton Levine, was a wealthy Brooklyn doctor who owned the El Caribe Country Club, a Brooklyn catering hall and event space that was a well-known hangout for Russian gangsters. Cohen and his siblings all had ownership stakes in the club, which rented for years to the first Mafiya boss of Brighton Beach, Evsei Agron, along with his successors, Marat Balagula and Boris Nayfeld. (Cohen's uncle said his nephew gave up his stake in the club after Trump's election.)
In the 1990s, there was an informal group of federal and local law enforcement agents investigating the Russian Mafiya in New York that called themselves "Red Star." They shared information they learned from informants. It was well known among the members of Red Star that Cohen's father-in-law was funneling money into Trump ventures. Several sources have told me that Cohen was one of several attorneys who helped money launderers purchase apartments in a development in Sunny Isles Beach, a seaside Florida town just north of Miami. This was an informal arrangement passed word-of-mouth: "We have heard from Russian sources that in Florida, Cohen and other lawyers acted as a conduit for money."

(14,566 posts)I am not in love with Avantee as a lot of people are, but he seems competent, and if he so sure, and he knows him, I guess that is possible.
But, from a distance, he feels like Manafort to me. Maybe he flips, but doesn't seem like an easy Flynn type rollover.

(46,166 posts)Some talking heads were discussing how all this could go to the NYC level. And since Rikers Island hasn't been shut down yet - Cohen will flip. I agree. Facing that development he'll flip like a pancake.

(15,124 posts)If you look closely at Cohen's face in that photo of him with his cigar smoking "buddies" last Friday, he looks scared shitless to me. I think they were reminding him of the chits they hold and how Uncle Vlad won't be happy. It's like Manafort. He knows that his handlers in Moscow will help him to fall off his fifth story balcony. Cohen would need to go very far away for a very long time in order to flip.

But, he feels like Manafort to me.

(28,799 posts)i was thinking he might tell the feds i'll give you what you want, you give me plastic surgery and put me in witness protection. i'm not sure he would survive telling it all...also not sure that the prosecutors don't already have the evidence.
i really, really, want the law to prevail when it comes to this perfidious gang of thieves.

(28,799 posts)he has a family. and what's he getting in exchange if he takes a fall for trump? exactly. he should try to make the best deal he can - personally i think he should still do some real time - and get out of prison to walk his daughter down the aisle or whatever.

(37,648 posts)So I guess they don't know much about Cohen, really. Or the info I saw is wrong.
He has one child, Samantha, age about 22.
If he flips, it'll be to save his own *ss. He's a multimillionaire who likes to live and travel in luxury. He doesn't need to work. He can take his money, which is probably invested & stashed throughout the world (thanks for the tips, Manafort!), and retire in comfort. He might even write a book and make a few more million. He'll be a star on the party circuit. THAT'S why he'll flip. He might take a bullet for Trump, but he never said he'd waste away in prison for him.

(8,955 posts)mouth to have already effectively communicated to prosecutors through that warrant. He's already failed to protect criminal confidences. He doesn't need a pardon... he needs witness protection already, and the only way for him to get that is to do what we call the "California Roll".
