The point being, just a few weeks before the primaries began in earnest and he was doing badly in the polls, he totally shifted gears. Or maybe a better analagy would be he went off his leash. I was at some charity dinner with all the candidates and when Joe’s turn to speak came around, everybody was “Where the hell has this guy been?” It was like Bernie Sanders and Bill Clinton had a baby, with their best attributes on display. Amazing talent.

If he’d started that campaign as the barn burner he finished, I have no doubts he would have won easily.
