Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsLatest scam attempts out there has hit me several times, twice just today.
My "Wells Fargo credit card" is having some sort of issue.
I never have used Wells Fargo or have a credit card.
And on my phone I got a call from the "electric utility."
Went right to a robocall sales pitch for a "call for help" system.

(23,314 posts)We get multiple calls per week from a robot stating that Microsoft has detected suspicious activity on our computer. I sick my 12 year old on them and he takes them for a ride. Hes a master at harassing scammers.

(14,565 posts)I get that robo call multiple times per week and sometimes multiple times per day. It's a female voice emphasizing that there's nothing currently wrong with your credit card account, but you need to call them anyway. Recently they changed the recording slightly. It's now a different woman with a different name and a few words were altered. Previously it was Rachel and today I heard Lisa. Otherwise exactly the same scam. They never specify which credit card they are referring to. Apparently they are claiming they can reduce your interest rate but you have to pay to do it. I looked it up last year and the scam had been reported all across the country for years.
I block the numbers but they show up again with slightly different numbers. It is always a 786 prefix number, at least here in Miami.

(16,168 posts)you'll get passed along the chain. They ask for your balance, the expiration date, the account number. (hahahahaha) like someone would give that out to a broken english speaking caller.
After a while and a bit of small talk, I pass them on to my guardian.
For some reason they don't want to talk to them.

(28,078 posts)The one where you're told the local police will be at your door if you don't pay your over due taxes immediately. I told the guy he was in big trouble because I'm an attorney for the IRS (a lie, just to be clear). I think he hung up in record time.

(49,002 posts)I calmly keep up the counseling (you will feel so much better, etc.) until they hang up. Two for two so far. They hang up in about 60 seconds.
The point is to plant seeds that sabotage the criminal scams by getting their employees unable to stop thinking about it and ending up quitting. They talk and new recruits become harder to find.

One thing you can do about calls is to report the # as spam in the White Pages app, that way the next person looking up the # can be warned.

(38,958 posts)I simply dont answer it. If it is a call with a purpose beyond trying to scam me, they will leave a message.

(34,195 posts)I use 'Hiya' for my android phone. There's also one for iPhones.
It catches the spam/scam calls.
There are many call blockers.
For email phishing, just be smart.
