I've lost three bills in the mail(box) due to this theft:

'Mail fishing' thefts on the rise in North Jersey

https://www.northjersey.com/story/news/crime/2018/04/17/mail-fishing-thefts-rise-north-jersey/486534002/

Long a symbol of convenience and security to postal patrons, that iconic blue mailbox at the corner means something very different to thieves prowling the streets of North Jersey: a potential gold mine of checks to be cashed.

In recent months, police throughout the area have seen a rash of mail fishing thefts — low-tech crimes in which rudimentary tools are covered with sticky substances to pluck bank documents, checks and birthday cards out of collection boxes.

The uptick in thefts, now the focus of a federal investigation, has prompted U.S. postal officials to mount a multi-pronged defense to educate patrons on ways to protect their mail. Meanwhile, police have made numerous arrests and caught suspects in the act.

"It's gotten to be a giant problem," said Robert Coyle, chief of police in Totowa, where eight people have reported checks stolen and fraudulently deposited. "They're almost telling people, 'Don't put your mail in mailboxes.' "

If we do write one, it's for the monthly payment on a piece of land that our mobile home is sitting on that we make in person, many times with cash we have just withdrawn from an ATM. Otherwise we are wearing the magnetic strip off my wife's credit/debit card.

Millennials are being murdered in schools before our eyes, and since our generation has done squat about it, they are taking matters into their own hands as we have seen over the past few months.

The jokes about them being flighty, lazy, out-of-touch, Tide Pod eating condom-snorters play directly into the hands of the NRA and their allies who want desperately want to discredit David Hogg.

Don't feed into that.

to the 1 or 2 companies that don't have better payment options. You can send personal checks that way too. Safer and much less liability. The checks they send out don't have my bank account number, etc.

They were endorsed with our own names and cashed via cell phone. I'm guessing the cell phone software is happy to find the endorsement ANYWHERE on the face of the check. But, obviously, a signature means nothing any more.

1. Closed my account and started a new one. Withdrawals and cashing outstanding checks not a consideration now.
2. Got the interest and late fee taken away for late credit card payment.

And FWIW, I want to support the post office by mailing checks. That's about $3.00 or more a month. Not much but it's a validation.

I still mail one bill per month instead of using bill pay, and I make sure to mail cards and letters frequently to friends and relatives. Yesterday I mailed a birthday card to a nephew whose birthday is Sunday.

One reason I love the post office is how awesome they were when I was heavily involved in buying and selling golf clubs on ebay. The rates were reasonable, they had ready made Priority boxes that fit shorter clubs like putters and wedges, and best of all they were extremely fast and the buyers were always satisfied. Contrast to UPS and especially FedEx, which were incompetent. They would mangle boxes and sometimes damage the clubs. Shipping delays were all but a guarantee. The golf forums are heavily right wing so those guys were desperate to praise the private companies and ridicule the post office, but eventually the truth was so obvious to everyone involved that the post office received the praise and all but a handful of the most stubborn posters were ridiculing UPS and FedEx. I still do some ebay stuff but to minor degree. It is strictly a buyer's market now, at least in golf.

18. My nearest post office removed all four drive-by boxes
Wed Apr 18, 2018, 04:12 PM
Apr 2018

A few months ago. They were side by side and heavily trafficked due to all the popular stores and restaurants in the connected mall. So I'm sure the fishers targeted those boxes.

That post office then had no outdoor boxes for a couple of months but a few weeks ago they placed one directly outside the front door and with a prominent video camera aiming smack at it from above. You can't use that box by car but you can get out and use it instead of going inside the post office.

I now drop anything important like a check inside the post office itself.

Roughly 12 years ago I had a check stolen and washed in Las Vegas. Those thieves didn't bother to fish. They used a crow bar and tore open the outgoing boxes at my complex, taking everything. It happened so frequently the complex eventually taped up the boxes and told owners that outgoing service was no longer available.

My check was to the cable company. Fortunately I found out about it quickly enough when the payment didn't post. The scammers quickly rewrote the check to some name I didn't recognize and a woman cashed it at one of the check cashing companies. It was a hassle but I was reimbursed. It took 5 or 6 weeks to straighten everything out, from when the check was first stolen.

Let's say it is made out to XYZ company. The person would have to open an account in XYZ company's name. Even if they signed the back of the check as XYZ company most banks wont cash it because you have to show ID.

What am I missing? Is the bank in on it?

they will pay the bill electronically if the payee accepts that form of payment, most do, or will actually mail a check if not. for free, and they guarantee the payment will post on time.
