(1,682 posts)I am only mentioning the following because so many people get it wrong. I am NOT trying to jump on you, standingtall.
The office is called "US Attorney". Every US Attorney is designated for a particular geographic area, or district. Many states, including New York, have more than one district. The one overseeing the Cohen case is the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York. I live in Tampa, Florida, and the one in our area is the US Attorney for the Middle District of Florida. There have been three districts in Florida for many years, and I think a fourth is either in the process of being created, or already has been created.
But most importantly, you are correct that Schneiderman is a state official who is not subject to removal (or pretty much anything else) by a president.

Rachel had it, dont know if it was Stormy related though ...

(59,503 posts)Scheiderman has been cooperating with Mueller and likely that attorney. As he said, if NY LAWS are found to have been violated, he could bring charges. This could be something like fraud or money laundrring.
Reread his comments. They are clearly a shot over the bow. Anyone not cooperating hoping for a Trump pardon, is being told that they could face state charges.
Eliot Rosewater
(31,112 posts)we can discuss it.

(14,311 posts)Rachel speculated that Trump could replace Berman with someone who is not recused, and possibly try to shut down the Cohen investigation.

(115,693 posts)Schneiderman is the Attorney General for the state of New York. These are two entirely separate systems. Trump has no jurisdiction over Schneiderman.

The removal process begins with a Governor's investigation. That's not going to happen in New York.

(14,750 posts)What I was referring to was that there were one or two elected dems who switched allegiances and caucus with the republicans, giving them control. They are still d's, but not really.
At least thats what I remember.
If something changed, I hadn't heard of it.

(14,750 posts)There is a special election next tuesday. If the D wins, they get a numerical majority but not control. The turncoat has to flip back to D to get the gavels back.

(1,474 posts)He will coordinate with the federal investigation. Cohen is so dirty that there will be many crimes. Federal indictments on some of them, but still save a few that can be indicted in New York and result in New York prison time. Cohen is in deep shit and a pardon will only result in state prison time rather than federal prison time. He will cooperate against trump.

(24,259 posts)While I know NY has Republican majority it's a tenuous one and most Republican politicians here tend to be more 'old school' Republican types who believe in states rights. It probably helps that Trump isn't exactly well liked in NY, not even by most NY Republicans.

(14,750 posts)we have extradition agreements with germany, so they could move to extradite him.
trump can deny extradition though. it is rare, but it has happened. It's unclear what would happen after he leaves office.
he would become a permanent resident though, since if he landed in any country with agreements with germany he would be arrested.
At least trump didn't make him an official ambassador. Or did he?
