TOO MANY MEN: Nothing like this has happened in human history.

Nothing like this has happened in human history. A combination of cultural preferences, government decree and modern medical technology in the world’s two largest countries has created a gender imbalance on a continental scale. Men outnumber women by 70 million in China and India.

The consequences of having too many men, now coming of age, are far-reaching: Beyond an epidemic of loneliness, the imbalance distorts labor markets, drives up savings rates in China and drives down consumption, artificially inflates certain property values, and parallels increases in violent crime, trafficking or prostitution in a growing number of locations.

Those consequences are not confined to China and India, but reach deep into their Asian neighbors and distort the economies of Europe and the Americas, as well. Barely recognized, the ramifications of too many men are only starting to come into sight.

-----
“There are very few girls here, and many girls from outside won’t want to marry into this village because it’s poor,” said 25-year-old Zhou Haijiang, as he laid the tiles in one of the house’s many bathrooms. Only a show of prosperity can attract, and hold, a bride.

“In our village, if you want to find a wife, you have to build a house.”

https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2018/world/too-many-men/?utm_term=.da7d6d34b817

‘There’s too many men’

First the girls refused to go to class. Then they launched a sit-in in the center of town. Then they stopped eating.

A group of 11-graders in the Indian village of Gothra Tappa Dahina sparked a public revolt because they were tired of being harassed by men as they walked to school in a neighboring town. Nearly every day on the road, they said, they would be circled by young men buzzing them on motorbikes, grabbing their scarves, their bodies, and calling them sexually provocative names.

Street harassment — called “eve teasing” here — has long been a problem in Indian society, which remains deeply patriarchal despite years of economic growth and superficial signs of change. Now, the widening imbalance between numbers of men and women in the country is exacerbating the problem, public safety officials believe.

That's when the emphasis is placed only on our reproductive ability, and also we become like "sexual property" of not just the romantic partner, but all other stray men.

Things are going to get ugly there.

Not in the sense that women are sex objects, but in the sense that a married daughter becomes a member of someone else’s family.

Especially under a (reformed) one-child policy, who’s going to take care of you when you’re old? In an improvised family that might have 13 kids (like my grandparents generation in the US), if 12 of those kids are female, again: who’s going to take care of you when you’re old?

Then there’s the concept of kyriarchy, which is an excellent way of selling the negatives of patriarchy. With these traditional attitudes towards marriage, men suffer, too, just in a different way.

Paolo Freire teaches us that oppression is bad for the oppressor, too, and that the oppressor frequently doesn’t even realize they’re in power.

Too many men believe they have the god-given right to sexually harass or assault any female they choose as it is. Certainly not all men, but enough to make things very uncomfortable if you are a female doing something as mundane as walking down the street, shopping, or if you're a little girl playing in your own yard. Ask any female of any age if she's been sexually harassed. Ask her how young she was when she remembers first being sexually harassed or assaulted. I remember being sexually harassed by a group of grown men when I was 7. This is a "normal" occurrence if you are female. What girls go through in India is what all females go through, but taken to the 10th or higher power. I'm sick of it.

Of a British-Pakistani man, a doctor, who had an interest in magic, ever since a godfather-type to him and the family came from India to visit him when he was a child and performed some of the more common "miracles" that beggars perform. He took a sabbatical and went to India to learn them, and in his travels, he came across, "medical doctors," who went from village to village with an X-Ray machine so pregnant women could see what sex their baby was. More often than not, if it was female (or appeared female), the "doctors" would perform a risky abortion at the mother's request. Since most of these women and their husbands were poor, they couldn't afford any kind of dowry for a future husband. And this was just one pair. He correctly guessed that it would soon lead to a shortage of women.

He did this, in the 90s I believe, which was when I was dating a woman of Indian heritage (American, parents were immigrants). She had recently gone to India to visit family, and one day, a parade of men came through her aunt's house where she was staying, who would just look at her and then leave. She couldn't figure out what was going on but finally realized her aunts were worried that since she was in her early twenties, her marriageability was coming to an end so they were trying to set her up. She's been married to an American and has a PhD in psychology probably since a few years after we broke up. I know it's anecdotal, but if men went from having their pick to not being able to find anyone in around 20 years, that's quite amazing.

with their limits of 1 child per couple and reported infanticide (probably mostly in rural areas) of baby girls due to the belief in the value of the boys (probably because of the war thing). China hasn't been involved in a war for decades (not counting some support of North Vietnam and probably North Korea).

The Chinese who had more than 1 kid would sometimes have another, for various reasons.
Some parents could not afford the fine for having a 2nd kid, so they did report the birth.
But this left the kid more or less "stateless". No papers he /she existed, no way to go to school, or work, because of the way China documents its people. You have to show a piece of paper for almost anything now.

There are employers who will hire a ghost kid, off the books, but they also take advantage of the situation and pay slave wages.
Counterfeiters make good money, tho.

A fascinating result of messing with mother nature, as it were.

human trafficking - not always for sex

(comment from a blog) --- Sons are a huge business. Apparently you have to pay a large dowry if you have a daughter, so it is cheaper to buy a stolen boy, raise him with the daughter, have them marry, and have grandkids to take care of you when you are old.

-----------------

This goes against the law of supply and demand.

Dowry?

If there is a shortage of women to marry, then they should require a premium price to woo rather than a premium price to get rid of.

in the mid-19th century, there was devastating flooding of the Yangtze River, and resulting years of famine. As a result of having more mouths than they could feed, a lot of families engaged in female infanticide (because then, as now, in China, girls were seen as being worth less). This resulted in a regional gender imbalance in that generation of about 25% more men than women; one of the arguable results of that surplus of men was the Nien Rebellion in Northern China.
