Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) showed his finesse lifting up rapper Cardi B’s political beliefs on Twitter.

The former presidential candidate on Wednesday tweeted about Cardi B, Social Security, and making America great again, prompting some to scratch their heads and others to say, “2018 is great!” (OK, fine, the “others” are really us).

Social Security Works first tweeted a graphic of Cardi B’s comment about former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt: “He’s the real ‘Make America Great Again,’ because if it wasn’t for him, old people wouldn’t even get Social Security.”

Yes, FDR gave us Social Security and the New Deal.

But FDR also had a problem with anti-Semitism, and he was responsible for Japanese internment (as well as German interment, which is lesser known).

Japanese internment is exactly the sort of “MAGA” idea Trump would come up with, approve, and then botch implementing.

Let’s be honest. FDR wasn’t perfect. There are things about him that are condemnable. He isn’t on Andrew Jackson’s level, but we don’t have to whitewash him.

I didn’t realize we Dems were incapable of nuanced views of our heroes. I didn’t realize we looked at our past president with the same rose colored glasses Republicans look at Saint Ronnie with.

I didn’t realize we dismissed real, historical injustices against human beings in order to maintain the purity of our heroes.

Excuse me for thinking more of us.
