I think the GOP wanted to leak edited portions of the memos if they could find some way to make Trump look innocent and capable, and Comey look like a biased vindictive buffoon.

Now the best they can do is scream...but Comey did not write memos after meetings with Obama. Unfortunately Comey already answered why he wrote the memos. Trump was fucking crazy.

2. Most of the content was already out, either from Comey's original testimony

or from his book; there isn't much that's new except for more details, but no bombshells. The GOPers are whining about Comey making notes of his meetings with Trump but not of any with Clinton or Obama (SO UNFAIR! BAD!), but I can't see that there's anything in the memos that changes anything. What's concerning is that they were immediately leaked to the press after they were finally turned over to Congress, even though that was not DoJ's intent when they disclosed them. The GOPers think Comey is a traitor and horrible for even writing these notes and that by itself is UNFAIR and BAD - but the notes don't support any of that, but only that Comey's reports are consistent and are not at all favorable to Trump.

5. Dealing with a manager you can't trust

I would think that it is common knowledge to save e-mails/document communications with any manager you don't trust to have some evidence in case they later try to throw you under the bus.

leaked the to the press. I think the Republicans let their preconceived hatred of Comey override any sort of caution. Now the spin machine is cranked up and they're desperate to make Comey's words fit their outrage.

Once again, these morons are about to get hoisted on their own petard, with a little help from Comey.

even though this is evidence in an ongoing investigation wouldn't normally be revealed. Fire Rosenstein and then fire Mueller.
