By Jennifer Rubin April 20 at 9:58 AM
If you did not know better, youd think House Republicans were trying to sink President Trump.
We had the fake unmasking scandal, including a clandestine visit to the White House by Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.). It turned out to be a dud, revealing that Nunes was a dull-witted cohort of the president.
Then came the Nunes memos. Hey, well create a scandal by pretending that the Justice Department and the FBI lied to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court about the origins of the Steele dossier! Democrats would never fill in the blanks to show that is false or that the Carter Page FISA warrant did not launch the Russia investigation! Wrong and wrong.
Then came the dopiest idea of all threaten to subpoena the James B. Comey memos and then charge Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein with contempt when he refuses. Did it dawn on them that he would hand them over and that they would match almost identically with everything Comey has said or written? Apparently not. This crowd has blown itself up more times than Wile E. Coyote.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) and House Intelligence Committee Chair Nunes, for reasons known only to them, thought the memos release would be helpful to Trump. Wrong. The Comey memos released to the House and immediately leaked contain, it is fair to say, not a single helpful fact for Trump.
To the contrary, Comeys attention to detail and perspicacity bolster his own credibility. It is all there the presidents rambling monologues, obsession with the alleged pee tape, attempts to lean on Comey to let Michael Flynn off the hook, demands for loyalty and so on. The only surprises the claim that Vladimir Putin told Trump personally that Russia has the most beautiful hookers, Trumps frustration with Flynn for not making certain his first call to a foreign leader was
. drumroll, please
Putin reinforce the image of a narcissistic, attention-challenged president who really has no clue how to conduct himself. Trumps repeated denial that he used prostitutes, or denial that he even spent the night in Russia (an assertion contradicted by his former bodyguard Keith Schiller), suggests what worries him the most.

(45,003 posts)They got nothing. Not even a set of steak knives. Meanwhile the Mueller effort pushes forward while separate investigations and lawsuits have boxed Trump in. We're pretty darn close to checkmate.

(4,757 posts)but for the base. All they have to do is claim they exonerate trump and it is so. The base is made up of propaganda watching dolts that do not read. And if they do read, it is also to fill their head with crap.
My mom reads all of O'really's books that are ghost written by someone else. Even now after all the news of his behaviour.

(6,254 posts)These two dimwits along with Nunes and Scalise and a few others are the absolute worst of the bunch and would cripple this country even worse if they ever became Speaker. I mean the lie with such ease especially Jordan with that smirk on face as he spews lie after lie. The DNC should do their best to unseat these bastards. I dont care what kind of Blue Dog dem the DNC puts up if it gets rid of these creeps. You see Scalise walking with a cane and he still kisses NRAs ass. This man truest does not deserve to be in Congress, he is an affront to humanity and an insult to every victim of gun violence. Looking
at each man its hard to believe there is this much evil front and center running our country. I just hope the liberal era that will follow Trump will forever change our country and silence the Tea Party. They have in so many ways harmed our country. And when Dems take back power there should be no mercy for the likes of these men and others in the Senate like McConnell, Cruz, Johnson etc. Vile despicable men!!

(4,397 posts)to bring an end to this.
Nunes has obviously drunk the Kool-Aid but some are in the position to disagree with Trump privately but can't publicly because his base dominates in their District.
So they pretend to toe the party line, knowing that it won't actually help Trump and that the base is too stupid to work out that it won't help Trump and also that it gives them plausible deniability for not really helping Trump when the shit goes down (ala "I voted to release Comey's memos which ultimately supported the case and therefore I wasn't enabling Trump's obstruction of justice your honor."

(4,848 posts)They would love to see Trump out and Pence replace him. Pence is one of their own and will tow the McConnell led GOP line.
The other reason they won't protect Mueller ( at least before the 2018 elections ) is that they would lose the Trump voters.
