New York Times: Dont Be Progressive, Be a Liberal

A New York Times op-ed by political scientist (and former Bob Kerrey aide) Greg Weiner may well be the New York Times–iest op-ed ever.

Its ostensible subject is why Democrats should call themselves “liberals” and not “progressives.” But in making that case, it hits most of the main points of the New York Times‘ ideology—one that has guided the paper since the late 19th century.

I will now have to read the article to see why he says this, I may end up disagreeing.

The NYT article may make some interesting points, but as a practical matter, the people using the words "progressive" and "liberal" don't use them in the way that the NYT article interprets them. Effectively, with respect to American politics, they both mean the same thing, which is the left side of the political spectrum.

Why shouldn't we be depressing the accelerator of change? People tend to hang labels on things for sake of convenience when discussing complicated issues. To me to be liberal IS to be progressive. Some of us just want to push for more progress, faster, than others. The fact people are uncomfortable with change is just the way life is. Doesn't make change bad which means I think I can be progressive and it's the same as being liberal.........

the word "liberal" into a pejorative. I'm a flaming liberal. Yeah, I'm a progressive too of course, but I was a liberal first, I identify as a liberal and I'm proud to be a liberal. A flaming one.

I hope what I'm saying has some bearing on the article. I have to go to work. I'll read it tonight for sure.
