The live chat is now over. Thank you to everyone who participated. --SkinnerDemocratic Underground is pleased to host an online discussion with Dave "Mudcat" Saunders, a Senior Strategist for the Wayne Powell for Congress Campaign, which is challenging Republican Majority Leader Eric Cantor in Virginia's 7th Congressional District.
Mudcat's candidate, Wayne Powell, is a retired Army Colonel, a small business owner, and a community lawyer. Wayne Powell was born and raised in Virginias 7th Congressional District. He is running for Congress against Eric Cantor because veterans and working people need someone in Washington who will fight for them. And yes, he can beat Eric Cantor!
Recently, Cantor was caught red-handed, hiding a "spousal" exemption in House Insider Trading bill. Cantor's actions open the door to questions about his spouse's involvement in a Cayman Island hedge fund firm. Below is a piece that Mudcat wrote about the issue in the Huffington Post.
Please post your questions for Mudcat in this thread. He is going to join the discussion sometime around 2 pm ET today. Please be aware that he may not be able to answer every question.
Welcome, Mudcat!
Mudcat sent me this message to get the discussion started:
I'm here today at my request to answer your questions on how we're going to beat this degenerate. The reason I contacted Skinner is because many of your comments have made it to my computer, and I like your style. Simply put, many of you are ready to fight the bastards, and a lot of you are more than ready. I feel at home.
Bring on the questions.
Here is his article from HuffPo...
By Dave Mudcat Saunders, Reprinted with permission
When President Obama signed the STOCK Act into law on April 4, it appeared that the country was finally on the road to curbing "insider trading" by members of Congress and their staffs. Members from both sides of the aisle were giddy as they hailed the "Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act" as a move that would restore trust in government by making members and their staffs disclose their stock transactions within 45 days.
However, there were skeptics in the Capitol when it came to those exempted from the Act. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) railed that the Act did nothing to stop the lucrative and un-American industry of unnamed individuals selling "political intelligence" (he called it "political espionage" to Wall Street and offshore investment firms. He called for these pirates of "non-public information" to register as lobbyists and disclose to whom they were selling the inside dope. In the House, that provision was stripped out by Majority Leader Eric Cantor, drawing outrage from an emotional Grassley.
And now in a masterful case of investigative journalism, CNN reporters Deidre Walsh and Dana Bash have uncovered even more of Cantor's deceptive and intentional gutting of the Act. Their report revealed a huge discrepancy in the Senate and House Bill... namely, the exemption of spouses and dependent children. The CNN report revealed that the Senate bill did include a provision that covered spouses and children, "but when Cantor's office wrote the House version, this language was shifted to a different section of the bill." Spouses and dependent children were exempted from the House's new reporting requirements.
When CNN first came across this discrepancy in the Senate and House versions, Cantor's office claimed "it did nothing to change the intent of the STOCK Act. But when pressed with the new information uncovered by CNN, the majority leader's office conceded it made changes to the House bill that effectively took out the requirement for spouses and children to file these reports."
Finally, once they knew they were caught, Cantor's office acted like CNN hadn't written down their first answer by saying: "Since new information has been brought to our attention with respect to this discrepancy, we are reviewing our options regarding transaction reports in the House of Representatives."
How could this information be "new" to Cantor? He was the one who changed it and moved it to a different section of the bill.
Cantor's office also told CNN they hadn't figured out when or how to fix it. He's Majority Leader, and he doesn't know when or how? The truth is he could fix it today if he wanted to. He called for 33 different votes to repeal the Affordable Care Act, and he can't call for a way to eliminate the "spousal and dependent children exemption" from the House version of the STOCK Act?
What is Cantor's motive? There is so much smoke floating around Cantor the Capitol Police should check the batteries in his office's fire alarms. Could it have to do with his own spouse (who he exempted from the House version) being a partner in the investment firm of Alternative Investment Management LLC., a company who deals in hedge funds for "high net worth individuals"?
It is no secret that Cantor was TARP's head cheerleader in the House, and AIM's president and both of the listed partners, including Mrs. Cantor, were formerly with Goldman Sachs (who received $10 billion in the bailout). According to Cantor's financial disclosure form, Mrs. Cantor at the time was with New York Private Bank & Trust who also received $267 million in the bailout. Of note, NYPBT is one of the top 10 banks who haven't paid back a dime to American taxpayers.
Also, SEC filings show that Mrs. Cantor's investment firm, Alternative Investment Management LLC., has a hedge fund in the Cayman Islands with assets of $134,570,536. While she is listed as a partner in AIM, Mrs. Cantor is not listed on any SEC filings. This raises two very serious questions. Is somebody trying to hide her name? Is her only job to sell political intelligence? Since his spouse is a named partner in AIM, a moron can see that Cantor obviously appears to ahve a personal financial stake and conflict in "spousal exemption," and with it, offshore tax games.
Dave "Mudcat" Saunders is a senior strategist for Wayne Powell (D), who is running for Virginia's 7th Congressional District against Rep. Eric Cantor (R).

(63,645 posts)Bottom line it for us. Could you explain, in plain English, what Cantor's spousal exemption does and why it matters?
Dave Mudcat Saunders
(28 posts)I don't speak plain English. I speak hillbilly, but to answer your question, CNN reported that Cantor inserted a "spousal exemption" in a different section of the House version of STOCK Act which was supposed to get members of Congress out of the investment business. The problem is HIS spouse is a partner in an investment group with assets approaching a billion dollars, not to mention a $135 million hedge fund in the Cayman Islands. It's not hard to connect the dots on this. Cantor's wife can legally use "non-public" information for the Cantors and her investors.
senseandsensibility
(17,132 posts)I must speak hillbilly too because that was perfectly clear.
Skinner
(63,645 posts)Thanks.
Ruby the Liberal
(26,219 posts)Did not know this. That certainly puts a whole new spin on the STOCK act, now doesn't it. Sure is a different story than how the media spun it as just being spouses with eTrade accounts or something.
aquart
(69,014 posts)Then steal with both hands.
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)my question is, where would Cantor's wife GET this 'non-public' information? If the law forbids members of Congress from using it (I think that is the case) and if a member of Congress' spouse has a financial interest in that information as Cantor's spouse does, does the law not include spouses such as Mrs. Cantor from being provided with the info from a member of Congress even if he is her spouse?
Maybe someone should be asking Cantor if he has ever provided 'non-public' information to his wife?
Btw, thank you for coming to DU today.
Dave Mudcat Saunders
(28 posts)Spouses are "exempted" by Cantor's movement of the provision. It is legal inside trading. Unbelievable, huh?
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)I still think, that even if spouses are exempt, HE is not. And if he provides his spouse with inside info considering her 'interest' in that info, he is violating the law knowing how she will use it. I guess they would simply deny it though.
Keep up the good work and let us know what we can do to help rid Congress of Cantor who is one of the worst of the worst of them!

(52,791 posts)Cantor Budget? I read that one focus group just plain didn't believe what the pollsters were telling them the plan did!
Dave Mudcat Saunders
(28 posts)The Cantor budget is the Ryan Budget which increase the deficit by 2.7% and 6 trillion more debt over the next 10 years.
After busting up the "Grand Bargain" that would have seriously cut the deficit, Cantor and his cronies came up with that.
The 7th District is fiscally conservative, and Cantor is not.

(52,166 posts)I was watching you on Rachel Maddow's show and was very surprised to see that you are making Powell's pro gay rights positions such an up front issue. Frankly Virginia doesn't strike me as a pro gay mecca. Has the pro gay message made that many inroads in that part of Virginia?
Dave Mudcat Saunders
(28 posts)Quite frankly, the District, like so many in the country, is tired of hearing about gays when the country is going to Hell. They want to do something about the economy. People who hate gays aren't going to vote for us anyway.

(1,013 posts)WHY can't the teabaggers be exposed for who they really are? Is it true that Mr. Cantor requires any of his aids in D.C. to read Ayn Rand? AND if this can be proven, then WHY can't Rand's atheism be used in this war against our democratic republic?
A whole lot of Fundie Christians would go ballistic if they knew how deep ties with Rand's philosophy the RW goes.
Thanks, and thanks for being here.
OKAY, just got an email that it is RYAN that openly demands Rand be read. BUT still every time these folks open their mouths, its like reading Rand's "For the New Intellectual".
Dave Mudcat Saunders
(28 posts)To begin with, I'm not going to blast the tea party in this campaign. They despise Cantor as much as I do, and they have every right to do so. There are several who have told us they're voting for Wayne. Everybody despises crooks.
As far as Fundie Christians are concerned, I am not religious, but I do have a lot of faith. I have learned from experience that God doesn't give a damn about partisan politics. He's into the individual hearts. That's the song I think the Dems ought to be playing because it's the truth. The evangelicals run more people away from faith than they ever corral. That's because their political message is about spiritual self-righteousness and the hate wedges.

(11,395 posts)How hard is it there for a Democrat like Wayne Powell?
Dave Mudcat Saunders

I'm continually astounded that simple message is not proclaimed. Just once I would love to hear Obama tell the people to elect people who can work to find common ground on which solutions can be built.
Here's to a victory and good riddance to Mr Cantor. The countryside down there is gorgemous and prettiful. It's a shame Cantor's projected attitude (we all know he's only out for himself) is fairly common.

(2,667 posts)In the end, after we take the election, there will be the Party blockade that has to be run. It is as if the nation has two completely different sets of problems, one political and one physical. Our infrastructure crumbles and as our education system turns to shit, the military is out of control but in fact may be eclipsed by the Patriot-Act-driven industry - who knows? That's on the one hand, the other hand holds an Obstructionist Republican Party controlled by elements from god only knows what constituencies.
And in the end who is in charge? Who heads the Republican Party, who calls the shots. For the Democrats its the President, its as easy as that. You like what he does or you don't, but he's the one at the top. Who speaks for the Republicans, Boehner, Cantor, some clown at Heritage or AEI? Maybe a FOX talking head, someone on Right-Wing-Radio? Who?
Dave Mudcat Saunders
(28 posts)They are putting the country in jeopardy to get elected and preserve their power. I've always wondered why politicians work so hard to get the power, and once they have it, tend not to use it for fear of losing it.

(4,267 posts)We hear a great deal of talk lately on how Social Security is doomed (I doubt this) unless we make changes. Usually, these changes seem to simply make life more difficult for already poor people. I live in Florida, the lair of Rick Scott and Alan West, so it's even worse here.
I have a personal stake in this, admittedly. I'm physically disabled at age 27, have been since I was 17, and I rely upon SSI to survive. The payments already aren't enough to live above poverty, but at least I can reliably see my doctors at the university.
So: what is your position on the defense of Social Security and/or whether changes need to be made? How would you regard the disabled and poor in this? The talk is usually about the elderly; we don't seem to get much airtime.
