(11,564 posts)I welcome even the idea of greatly increased female representation, as well as any other broadening of that demographic. A government of the people should look like the people.

My heart will always ache for what might have been, but as I watched my Senator walk briskly across the stage to engage with Colbert I suddenly realized: Kamala looks and moves the way Hillary would have if she had not been bloodied and scarred by 30 years of RW hatred. For the first time, I thought: this woman could make it.
Just sayin'

(1,278 posts)Sen. Kamala Harris I find to be a combination of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama with a bit of Joe Biden and Barbara Boxer thrown in. A formidable combination indeed. Easy on the eyes helps as well.

(21,639 posts)GOP cavemen - and women - will be bringing crying babies by the dozen every time abortion rights come up for debate.

(7,220 posts)Very short-sighted on their part. OTOH if the Dems are smart (a BIG if), they could take the opportunity to introduce legislation mandating that states that restrict abortion have to pay for day care, diapers, etc. Turn this shit around on them.

(21,639 posts)When dealing with crooks, you have to at least be able to think like them a little.
This has always been one of our great challenges as Democrats.
Not that all Democrats are angels; it's just that they approach situations in good faith, while our friends in the GOP don't even know what that is.

(7,220 posts)and I think that the poorer and less educated, the more likely to have lots of children, often starting in the teen years. Yes, some people use reproduction as a means of income in the form of welfare. I've always thought the rationale for welfare in that situation was that a) the parents might not always be poor and presumably could care for their children without support eventually, and b) people who love children and want to have them shouldn't be denied that just because they are too poor to care for them. In this case, it's treated as a right and I'm not sure I agree with that policy. To me, having children when you can't afford it is irresponsible and selfish. Even with means it seems to me a vanity thing, when there are children in foster care right there in your own city (owing to the lack of stability that comes with having children too young, being uneducated and too poor to care for them properly without assistance). But then I'm not a "baby" person. I prefer the company of animals to most people, babies especially.
Also, regardless of socioeconomic status, there's long been social expectation that straight couples MUST have children. Fortunately that sentiment is becoming less prevalent over time.
Having said all that, I'm ecstatic that Tammy Duckworth is leading the way for mothers to be being treated wih dignity, accommodation and respect, ESPECIALLY in a profession/setting that has long been considered the domain of old white men (who ironically spend a considerable amount of time deciding what women can and can't do with their own bodies).
