(22,596 posts)but we don't elect our presidents that way. So Clinton wins California's 55 electoral votes if she wins the state's popular vote by 1 vote or 3 million votes.
So bills are passed by members of the House in 435 congressional districts and then by 100 senators who get elected in statewide elections. And then to become law the bill needs to be signed by the president who also does not get elected in a national election.
So 57% of Americans support more gun control, but do all of those 57% vote for their representatives based on that issue or a combination of other issues.
That's why a 57% piece of the pie really does not have a 57% bearing on how things get done in this country on a national level. How "united" is the United States because these diverse electoral entities tend to look out more for their own individual best interests than as the nation as a whole.
