BRUCE CAMPBELL: Starz is ending the 'Ash vs. Evil Dead' series.

.

One of the funniest horror shows of all time is coming to an end, probably without proper closure (as usual).

Starz cites low ratings, but anyone familiar with the Evil Dead trilogy, Evil Dead the Musical, or this series--sometimes the ratings aren't everything to the viewing public. Many people have Ash vs. Evil Dead get togethers, and if their movie DVD sales decades later is any reflection, Starz will be cashing in on this series for decades.

Now, we're left with more shit to wade though, since all the unique and fun things get canceled.

Ash Vs Evil Dead has been the ride of a lifetime. Ash Williams was the role of a lifetime.

I will always be grateful to Starz, Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and our tireless fans for the opportunity to revisit the franchise that launched our careers. Thank you!

Dang! One of the reasons why I keep HBO is for Bill Maher. One of the reasons I kept Starz was for Ash vs.Evil Dead.

Starz is an extra $10/mo on my FiOS cable plan. That probably hurts viewership. TheBlackAdder Apr 2018 #7
Yeah, any premium channel is going to have different constraints to a broadcast one Blue_Adept Apr 2018 #8
I just think that where they lose on viewership, they'll gain over decades with fanbased DVD sales. TheBlackAdder Apr 2018 #9

Starz and Cinemax continue to squander their strong original series.

I wonder if Starz took into account those of us who tend to binge watch episodes? I find it hard to believe ratings were down that much.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ash_vs_Evil_Dead#Episodes

First season was in the high 200,000 to low 300,000 range, which already wasn't good but the show was short so that helped. This season it's down to the mid to high 100,000 range with a series low of 136,000 earlier this month.

They do factor in overseas to some degree and online viewing as well through their app combined with some home video sales. But the outlay for each season just isn't there to be justified when it could be put to a show that "could" do double that easily out of the gate. It's a popular cult show but a cult show nonetheless.

HBO would have nixed it awhile ago. Seeing how it dropped in the third season definitely makes it clear why it's getting the axe.

The premium channels always have a harder time of drawing an audience because they're a bit more limited in their advertising. your ABC networks can easily cross-market shows across their various platforms. Starz has just starz and most people don't just leave starz on all day, unlike say ABC throughout an evening or something. So it's more targeted but that just ends up going after a smaller group insteaed of a wide net.

People who are not Starz subscribers, or don't have that option, will purchase the DVD set.

There are millions of Ash fans worldwide.

There'll always be a segment, but the bulk that are not Starz members will just end up seeing non-monetized illegal streams of it and watch that way. With disc sales dropping regularly, that's not a market they want to count on either. It's somewhat shortsighted to be sure, but they have to focus on what will earn them subscribers as that's how Starz makes its money.

after the 3rd episode I found myself asking if I really wanted to sit through 3 entire seasons of this. I felt like I was watching an old "Supernatural" rerun. I don't watch "Supernatural" anymore either, so it's probably that my tastes are changing.

This is like one of my favorite shows. Well time to cancel Starz. Thank you Bruce for such an amazing character over the past decades and hopefully to newer things.
