I just saw a bit of an interview with GWB and Laura about Barbara right before she died

She was still alert and drinking bourbon. She said to her doctor, "Dr do you know why George W is the way that he is? It's because I drank and smoked when I was pregnant with him."

She sounds like a funny lady!

and Barb seated W as far away as possible from the Queen so there was less chance he could say anything stupid/embarrassing to her.

I think Barbara was more surprised than anyone he became president. I think she might of dropped W on his head when he was a baby.

And it was funny because W took it as a joke. But it was probably true.

marina on the 4th of July one year watching the fireworks (our friends had a boat) and suddenly as we were ready to leave all these SS men started to clear the path as the Bush family started to disembark their boat. They marched up the path and were pleasant enough and wished everyone a happy 4th, but Barbara was definitely staggering. I think she had maybe a bit too much, but she was cheerful and kind. It was just very strange, I have never been cleared by the secret service before and it was a little scary and shocking until we realized what was going on.
