Some of Stephen Miller's family members have a problem with the Trump administration as well as their relative's role in it, and have been making their feelings known on their personal Facebook pages.
"With all familial affection, I wish Stephen career success and personal happiness, however I cannot endorse his political preferences," Miller's uncle David S. Glosser wrote in a lengthy comment on the Johnstown, Pennsylvania, newspaper Tribune-Democrat's Facebook page in November, in response to a story about Miller's roots in the area. Stephen's mother, Miriam (Glosser) Miller, who is David's sister, grew up in Johnstown with her family.
"The Glosser family escaped Europe as dirt poor immigrants, joined the community, built businesses, and honestly sold goods to their fellow Johnstowners," Glosser wrote. "My nephew and I must both reflect long and hard on one awful truth. If in the early 20th century the USA had built a wall against poor desperate ignorant immigrants of a different religion, like the Glossers, all of us would have gone up the crematoria chimneys with the other six million kinsmen whom we can never know."
snip
Miller's mother, according to her brother David Glosser, was raised by "life-long Democrats." A Los Angeles Times profile described Miriam and her husband Michael Miller as "A Jewish family of longtime Franklin Roosevelt Democrats." Stephen's parents established the Michael and Miriam Miller Family Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, in 2012.

(53,985 posts)"Some of his best friends" will be his defense. It is sickening, and as sickening, those blaming his use of the term on a Jew, Miller, via speculation. While Miller is a disgusting POS, i find it equally disgusting that a revelation of anti-Semitism is partially deferred from the user and blame (partial) is placed on a Jew; though I can't say I am surprised.

The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,836 posts)Although I guess Spanky still talks to Bannon, so maybe he got it from him. Since I didn't even know Miller was Jewish, speculating that he was the origin of the slur wouldn't be a slam on Miller, would it?
Behind the Aegis
(53,985 posts)Why the need to speculate the origin of the anti-Semitic slur is a Jew?! FYI: Donald Trump 'kept book of Adolf Hitler's speeches in his bedside cabinet'
"Since I didn't even know Miller was Jewish, speculating that he was the origin of the slur wouldn't be a slam on Miller, would it?" And, now you do. Ignorance is not a justification. Why speculate about it at all? Why not just deal with the known, an anti-Semitic slur used by the "president" of the United States against a Jew?
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,836 posts)that Trump is too damn stupid to have come up with it himself. But I will accept your criticism and offer my apology.
Behind the Aegis
(53,985 posts)Sincerely, I thank you for listening to me, and understanding why I am finding the initial use insulting, as well as the blaming of a Jew for it. I agree, he is too damn stupid. Frankly, I doubt many are even familiar with the term, even other Jews, but it is big on Stormfront and National Vanguard, which is how I learned it years ago. I have never actually heard it in person.
The Untold Story: Trump's 'Sleepy Eyes' Insult A Jewish Slur Of Nazi Origin
Today, the "sleepy eyes" description is a common dog-whistle for the white nationalist movement.
For instance, there are countless articles published online by hate websites about how to spot someone who is Jewish.
These articles point to the person's eyes, and they often describe them as "sleepy." Examples can be easily found on sites like Stormfront; however, as a policy, we will not link to hate sites.
---snip---
Like a 5 year old in school, Trump may have picked up the term "sleepy eyes" in the halls of the White House -- and used it without knowing what he's saying.

At The Santa Monica Synagogue, members skew liberal, especially when it comes to immigration, said Rabbi Jeffrey Marx, the temples longtime rabbi. The confirmation course itself taught by Marx once a week on Tuesday evenings sought to instill empathy and respect for the other, the rabbi said.
We certainly did our best here to teach him the ethical standards of Judaism, Marx said. He certainly didnt grow up not having that knowledge base.

(1,777 posts)...but this Twitter thread was bullshit. Note that the writer didn't link to a single example of someone actually using "sleepy-eyed" as an antisemitic slur. I've never heard it, and I've encountered plenty of antisemitism and know my history. The fact that it was one of many elements in a Nazi typology doesn't mean that it became salient as a slur; it's not like "hook-nosed." If it wasn't recognized by other antisemites as a slur, and there's no reason to think it was -- the writer gave no links to deplorables high-fiving over it -- then it wasn't a dog-whistle.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,836 posts)and clearly intending it as an insult, that you have to wonder where it came from. I don't even get how Todd could be described as "sleepy-eyed" in the first place, since that's not a characteristic I've ever noticed or that anyone else I'm aware of has ever pointed out. I'm not crazy about the guy but he's always looked pretty alert to me. Maybe somebody came up with this explanation for the insult just because there doesn't seem to be anything else that makes sense. (I have also never heard of it as an anti-Semitic insult.)
Behind the Aegis
(53,985 posts)Granted, the ONLY places I have ever seen it are Stormfront and the National Vanguard. All the other anti-Semitic sites, I have visited over the years, I can't recall ever seeing that "slur" before. So, just because you are unaware, doesn't mean the white supremacists lurking in the WH don't know it.
The Untold Story: Trump's 'Sleepy Eyes' Insult A Jewish Slur Of Nazi Origin
---snip---
The term "sleepy eyes" originated from Nazi propaganda as a way of identifying Jewish people. But its use became more widespread over the last few decades, when white supremacist media like Stormfront began using it.
Today, the "sleepy eyes" description is a common dog-whistle for the white nationalist movement.

(53,985 posts)Is this a case of "I haven't seen it, so it must not exist"? In the general lexicon of run-of-the-mill anti-Semites, this is a rare term. Frankly, before I was exposed to it as an anti-Semitic term a few years back by a now deceased DU'er who used to track Stormfront, I had only heard "sleepy-eyed" as a derogatory term for Japanese people. Keep in mind, unless you are running in Neo-Nazis/White supremacists circles, the likelihood of hearing, much less knowing this term, are slim. That is why it is a dog-whistle. Some, it appears, seem to think "dog whistles" mean they have to have heard it themselves; that's not how dog-whistles work. There are many archaic terms out there, used only in small groups, that's why they are dog-whistles.
Did the "president" know or mean it in an anti-Semitic way? Probably not. My money is that he heard in the halls of the WH, probably from Bannon, or, IMO, Gorka.
I haven't been recently, and I think they changed the format, and most forums can't be "searched" anymore. I just did a quick check, and yep, that feature is gone...I am guessing "members only".

(37,748 posts)Your entire premise is wholly predicated on your own lack of experience in regards to this word... which itself seems a rather flawed manner of thought from the beginning, lacking research, lacking outside perspectives, lacking objective insight into different mores, etc.
It's also based on the fact that the person who wrote the Twitter thread gave absolutely no evidence for it's use as a slur.
If it's a now-to common slur, you'd think there'd be many examples.
