What's all this I'm hearing ...

... about a steak dinner at the White House?

What about the guests who don't like steak? And will all the steaks be burned to a crisp and smothered in ketchup, because that's the way Trump likes it?

Surely we can do better than this. Why couldn't it have been a fish dinner, or a -- oh, it's a state dinner.

That's different. Nevermind.

This is one example of why this country is run by a misogynist womanizer and the fundies think he walks on water. Where are our country's priorities and values? I guess they are hidden under gallons of ketchup.

The choice to highlight the Carolina Gold rice in the dish is also telling. A long-grain rice that became a staple crop in the Carolinas in the 18th century, Carolina Gold helped define Lowcountry cuisine. But there’s also a dark side to that history: The grain’s success created more demand for African slave labor on rice plantations. Gold rice fell out of favor as new strains that could be machine harvested were planted, slavery ended, and a series of hurricanes changed the growing conditions. Now prized as a rediscovered heritage grain, the inclusion of Carolina Gold in a state dinner underscores how food can speak to identity and history, and the way staple crops can shape a society (paywall).

I am barely able to stomach meat of any kind, let alone lamb. I would have trouble sitting at the same table with others who were eating lamb. were child I refused to eat any meat. I grew into some as a young adult.

rack of lamb in what sounds like a very nice menu, a fusion of American Southern cooking with French influence. Nothing about it says The Donald.

The meal will start with a goat cheese gateau with tomato jam, buttermilk biscuit crumbles, and lettuces from the White House garden. The main course will be a rack of spring lamb and Carolina gold rice jambalaya cooked in the tradition of New Orleans, a city founded by the French. For dessert: a nectarine tart infused with White House honey and crème fraîche.

United States President Donald Trump will host his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron. Considering what we know about Trump’s diet, it seems likely he’ll push the food around on his plate in an attempt to convince others he is actually eating his meal (though he may take two scoops of that crème fraîche ice cream). Perhaps he’ll have an errand boy make a McDonald’s run once the festivities are over.

Some flunky will be dispatched to Mackey-dees for a couple of filet o’ fish sandwiches and a large Diet Coke. Super sized fries. He will put on his jammies and robe and settle in for some Fox Noose to make himself feel better after having to play nice all evening. At last he can relax, scratch his ass and be comfortable. Melania will go to her room and lock the door.

So crowded that the knives are under the plates.

No room on the table for ketchup.

The round tables sat 10 people comfortably and the tables were set with centerpieces if the hosts wanted that. Each setting had the usual, without overdoing it. No one needs five or six glasses. That’s just begging for trouble because glasses get knocked over if you have to be extra careful when you reach for one, or when you have to be careful when you put it back on the table.

As servers we “hovered” close by to respond to any customer need and after we served prepared salads when the head waitress or waiter gave us a signal we would then take the salad plates away as they were finished. The cleanup was pretty unobtrusive. Then on a second signal we brought out the entrees so everyone would be served at the same time. As people finished eating we cleaned their places and did things like replenish their wine, water and coffee, and The cleanup was constant. We served dessert and did the same cleaning as we went.

By the time the conference or speakers were ready to start the people only had coffee cups, wine and water glasses and their desserts in front of them.

The photo makes me think of all the things that any server would be nervous about. The tables are too small for the number of people at each one. They’re too close together which means the servers have a hard time getting around the table, and there are too many glasses. It’s just begging for trouble.

... I have often watched SNL and imagined what one of Gilda's many characters would have to say about current events - especially now during the Trump debacle.

"A Mr. Richard Feyder from Fort Lee, New Jersey, writes: Dear Roseanne Roseannadanna, what's up with this orange idiot living in the White House? It's enough to make me sick."

I like to think that as long as we remember her (and we do), she's not really gone.

called "Love Gilda".

I can't wait to see it.

https://www.tribecafilm.com/stories/love-gilda-opening-night-tribeca-2018

We're opening the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival with a loving look at the life and legacy of an enduring comedy heroine.

The Tribeca Film Festival will open its 17th edition with the world premiere of Love, Gilda on Wednesday, April 18th, 2018. CNN Films presents the feature length documentary, produced by 3 Faces Films in association with Motto Pictures, which opens a window into the world of celebrated Emmy and Grammy award-winning comedian Gilda Radner, who became a cultural icon the moment audiences first laughed with her on the debut episode of Saturday Night Live.

A trailblazer for women comedians, her impact on the entertainment industry has endured for almost four decades. The film will premiere on the opening night of the Tribeca Film Festival at the Beacon Theatre in New York City, the city she called home and in which she catapulted to fame. Tickets for opening night go on sale on March 20th here. The 2018 Tribeca Film Festival runs April 18th to the 29th.

Can you state authoritatively that President Obama, or any other President, regularly offered an alternative? Or that the featured guest wasn't queried in advance about the menu?

There are a lot of things to complain about regarding President Trump. Meat vs. Fish isn't one of them.
