Embattled EPA Chief Is Belittling His Agency By Limiting Scientific Evidence

By Ken Silverstein
April 25, 2018

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt is under the gun because of his ethical lapses. But he is now firing back by proposing a rule that would that stifle science that relies on confidential data, thus limiting the use of best available technologies.

The cynical view is that Pruitt is now making such a move to get in the good graces of the president and his defenders who want to see the nation’s environmental regulations overhauled. But Tuesday’s proposal is most likely part of a broader strategic plan that places a greater emphasis on business development regardless of its impact on the land, air or water.

The one thing that is humming along at an alarming rate is the systematic dismantling of the EPA and environmental regulations by the current administration,” adds Neil Donahue, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University’s Department of Engineering and Public Policy. “The EPA's idea of imposing new restrictions on scientific studies used to develop and justify regulations would be inherently damaging.”

Just like the tax package passed on the backs of future generations, so too will the attack on the environment be paid by younger folks.

"it is also vandalism wantonly to destroy or to permit the destruction of what is beautiful in nature, whether it be a cliff, a forest, or a species of mammal or bird. Here in the United States we turn our rivers and streams into sewers and dumping-grounds, we pollute the air, we destroy forests, and exterminate fishes, birds and mammals -- not to speak of vulgarizing charming landscapes with hideous advertisements. But at last it looks as if our people were awakening." Theodore Roosevelt
