Jay Rosen: There is a risk that one third of the electorate will be isolated in an information loop of its own, where Trump becomes the major source of information about Trump, because independent sources are rejected on principle. That has already happened. An authoritarian system is up and running for a portion of the polity. Another way to say this is that before journalists log on in the morning, one third of their potential public is already gone.
There is a risk that journalists could do their job brilliantly, and it wont really matter, because Trump supporters categorically reject it, Trump opponents already believed it, and the neither-nors arent paying close enough attention.

(6,252 posts)The words that William Safire penned and that Spiro Agnew mouthed actually had enormous impact that has lasted until this day. They helped foster among conservatives and the folks that Nixon called the silent majority a growing mistrust of the mainstream media, a mistrust that grew over two generations into a form of hatred. It also started a dangerous spiral of events journalists started bending backwards to kowtow to their conservative critics, beginning in the time of Reagan, an ill-advised shift that did not win back a single reader or viewer on the right. Instead, it caused a lot of folks on the left and even the center to wonder why the national media had stopped doing its job, stopped questioning authority.

personally, i would hope for actually fair and objective factual reporting, but it might actually be in their commercial interest to lean to the left and leave the right-wing nuts to foxnews.
now, i'm not actually advocating a "liberal bias" to the media, but given the premise here, it might actually make commercial sense.

(14,178 posts)That's what's scary. At least one third not only exclusively listens to RW hate propaganda full of bald faced lies, but also will avoid like the plauge all media that dares to say otherwise.
And the kicker is that they are conditioned to think that that is how liberals do it. Just exchange RW with LW.
