General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsAs an LGBT person, I don't need to be told who my allies are.
Not by those on the far left who have treated gay rights advocacy as a distraction from more important issues ("identity politics" ).
And certainly not by those on the right who have engaged in organized political persecution against my community for decades. Are they kidding?
No. I'm perfectly capable of determining on my own who walks the walk when it comes to supporting my equality.
Just a friendly reminder, in light of recent events. Thank you.

My crowd I hung out with in the 80s in Los Angles were equally gay and straight men and women.
So am I an ally? I dont give it a thought. Its not up to me to decide. I spend my days with these folks as I do with anyone.
They never use the term ally because we are all just people. We dont need the term.

(23,549 posts)That's my perspective. And my being gay does enter into that. If someone is invalidating me or making me wrong, I don't consider that very friendly.

(6,262 posts)I am a geezer. I am still capable of growth beyond the images of the 50's.
But it does take a while. And it does take a post such as this to keep me learning.
Am acutely aware that while I talk the talk, no way can I ever walk the walk.
If this post is about Joy -- don't know what really cyber-happened, but long enough ago that I know real growth could have been absorbed between then and now.
She is brilliant and I adore and admire her, whatever her possible transgressions on this sensitive topic.
She was still finding her voice and her audience back then. Shes a good ally for the left. This gay person will cut her some slack.
