Pittsburgh workers remove controversial Stephen Foster statue

For the first time since its introduction in 1900, Pittsburgh’s Stephen Foster sculpture is leaving the public eye ... from Schenley Plaza in North Oakland, where it’s been on display since the 1940s. Before that, the 10-foot bronze piece was in Highland Park.

Controversial for its portrayal of the songwriter with an African-American banjo player at his feet ... long seen by many residents as condescending or outright racist.

More recently, the mayor’s office announced a statue recognizing an African-American woman will rise at the Oakland site. Community discussions to contemplate an honoree — or honorees — for the new piece are ongoing.

Foster, a Pittsburgh native, composed well-known songs including “Oh! Susannah” and “My Old Kentucky Home.” He died at age 37 in 1864.

I think Stephen Foster is important enough to American culture and music to warrant a memorial. But this statue is just plain racist. Foster may have been, too, at least a little bit. But there's no need to make that part of the sculpture, any more than a rendering of General Patton needs to include his anti-Semitism.
