Did anyone else listen to Them Hartmann today? Took calls about AAs and cops
I caught bits and pieces.
Thom was taking calls from African Americans discussing their interactions with law enforcement.
Not sure how to describe the stories - certainly scary, ridiculous (reasons for being stopped), dangerous for the target.
Stated simply, it was one ridiculous situation after another that just seemed so ludicrous. And I know I will most likely never have to deal with like these stories because of my white privilege.
One young man said he had been stopped over 20 times already for nothing. Another told how he was pulled over and the cop claimed he had violated Michigan's "left lane law" after he had made a totally legal pass and return to the right lane. (he was let go after a scene)
Another told of being the escort for a white prisoner on a bus and being told he (the black guard) would have to move to the back of the bus by a sheriff in Kentucky, while the prisoner could remain in his seat. On and On for a couple of hours.
These are the stories we almost never hear unless it ends up in a shooting etc.
It really drove home even more that living as a person of color in this country is hazardous just trying to stay alive.
I got the impression that the discussion was triggered by this thread earlier on DU, but do not know that for sure.
