Poll: Support for legal marijuana hits all-time high

Poll: Support for legal marijuana hits all-time high
BY MAX GREENWOOD - 04/26/18 12:37 PM EDT

Nearly two-thirds of U.S. voters back legalizing marijuana, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday.

Support for legalization hit 63 percent in the survey — the highest level of support recorded by a Quinnipiac poll. A third of American voters still oppose legalization, the poll found.

Support for medical marijuana is even higher, at 93 percent. Only about 5 percent of respondents opposed it.

The poll also found little support for Attorney General Jeff Sessions's decision earlier this year to rescind an Obama-era policy that paved the way for individual states to legalize marijuana without federal interference.

People are tired of their tax dollars going to fill private for-profit prisons for such meaningless reasons.

Drug addiction is a medical problem, and marijuana is not really a huge contributing factor. Recent indicators seem to show that legalizing weed leads to less addiction of stronger drugs in states that have gone that way.

Legalized Marijuana Could Help Curb the Opioid Epidemic, Study Finds
Mar.27.2017 / 8:47 PM ET / Source: Reuters

Hospitalization rates for opioid painkiller dependence and abuse dropped on average 23 percent in states after marijuana was permitted for medicinal purposes, the analysis found. Hospitalization rates for opioid overdoses dropped 13 percent on average.

An estimated 60 percent of Americans now live in the 28 states and Washington, D.C. where medical marijuana is legal under state law.

Meanwhile, the opioid epidemic - sparked by a quadrupling since 1999 in sales of prescription painkillers such as Oxycontin and Vicodin - kills 91 Americans a day.

I suspect most Dems will run on de-criminalization, at least, and a lowered emphasis on enforcement this fall. At least I think they should. Given the number of states that have moved ahead on this, Congress won't be able to hold out much longer.

This is what happens when it's legal.

Fortunately I'm a fairly accomplished shade tree mechanic, quietly and soberly fixing all the shit that's broke.

Welcome to my hell, Jeff Sessions.
