https://www.politico.com/story/2018/04/25/joy-reid-anti-gay-posts-550213Joy Reid will stay on air at MSNBC amid outcry over alleged anti-gay posts
The NBC spokesperson, who declined to be named, said Reid has referred the matter to law enforcement and that the network would wait for that process to play out before taking any action.
NBC representatives declined to say whether the network itself will investigate the posts. Reid did not reply immediately to a request for comment. Neither did the FBI, though it does not typically confirm or deny investigations.
Reid hosts a two-hour show on MSNBC on Saturday and Sunday mornings, though her status as a hero to the left has given her a larger profile. The alleged remarks, however, have prompted fierce backlash. PFLAG National, an LGBT advocacy group, rescinded Reids Straight for Equality in Media award on Tuesday.

EVEN IF SHE SAID these foolish statements...SO WHAT? Every single person alive has said stupid things on a variety of topics!
Including Barbara Bush...and that is why when she died I looked at everything and it warranted me saying nice things..even if she said some stupid things in her life.

(24,122 posts)that's the argument people are making.
I know the two situations are not identical, but this is how "our side" should have handled the Al Franken accusations.
These petty morons who have nothing better to do than gin up fake "controversies" about people who make it their mission to fight bigotry, misogyny, violence, and all social injustice need to be shut down. They need to be allowed to flail and writhe and thrash about, and then be totally ignored.
Back when I was young and stupid I used to write letters to the editor about what a tragic sin abortion was. I also used to quietly question whether or not homosexuals should be allowed to teach in public schools.
But once I got away from my (Republican) father's influence, I quickly realized that my true beliefs were the exact opposite of those. Now I donate to, and write letters in support of, Planned Parenthood, and I march and speak out loudly regarding the rights that I took for granted as a child, and how those rights belong to ALL of us, including all skin colors, all genders, all abilities and challenges thereof, and all sexual orientations...including my lesbian daughter.
I don't give a crap what Joy Reid did when she was young and stupid. I DO give a BIG CRAP that she currently embraces and embodies the ideas of equality and justice for ALL.
Joy Reid is one of our most eloquent and intelligent spokespeople in the effort to transform hearts and minds all over the world toward a more peaceful, nurturing, and loving humanity. THAT is what I care about.

(21,786 posts)And please, by all means, go through my 15+ years of past DU posts. There are over 20,000 of them, and I've managed to get through that time without being casually homophobic. (Although if you find something like that, posted under my username, I'll admit I wrote it, even if I don't remember, and won't claim "I was hacked".)
hlthe2b
(102,343 posts)Wow, you definitely are sure of yourself.
No, she's guilty of nothing to date except being the target of some very ugly attempts to take her down despite appropriate prior apologies for old posts that clearly showed poor judgement.
Spider Jerusalem
(21,786 posts)or called Ann Coulter a man, or any of the other things Reid said, yeah. (And one of those posts was quoted on DU in 2007; so much for "I was hacked" claims.)
hlthe2b
(102,343 posts)apologies. None of it is acceptable.
Spider Jerusalem
(21,786 posts)these others? she lied and claimed to've been hacked. I say "lied", because all the evidence suggests that she wrote them; they were certainly on her blog, and archived shortly after being posted, and, again, one of those posts was even linked to from DU. If she'd apologised, again, then this would be a non-issue. But she chose to lie about it in the most ham-handed and laughable way possible. If and when the "hacking" claims are proven false, her credibility will be entirely shot and her career at MSNBC will likely be over.
hlthe2b
(102,343 posts)this? Really?
Spider Jerusalem
(21,786 posts)If she apologised once, why spin an elaborate web of lies about having been "hacked"? Why bring in a bogus "cybersecurity expert" who claims "screenshot manipulation" and "fakery" when the referenced blog posts actually existed in the Internet Archive? If she hadn't lied, I wouldn't care. I don't really get why people are so invested in defending someone who is obviously not telling the truth, in a way that's damaging to her reputation and her credibility as any kind of "voice" for progressivism.
hlthe2b
(102,343 posts)Some see lies everywhere, even among allies.
Spider Jerusalem
(21,786 posts)because, again, one of the posts in question was quoted on DU at the time. And it isn't at all clear to me that she believes it; "I was hacked" seems to be the default defence for people who suffer from internet-related embarrasment.
hlthe2b
(102,343 posts)Spider Jerusalem
(21,786 posts)there isn't anything inherently "vitriolic" about viewing facts as neutral things that are not altered by partisanship. And there are some indisputable facts, here; among those facts, that the blog posts in question appeared on Joy Reid's blog over a decade ago, as confirmed by their existence in multiple web archives with archival timestamps that correspond closely to their original dates of posting. I'm not sure why someone who's a supposed "progressive" should be held to a lower standard where truthfulness and honesty are concerned.
hlthe2b
(102,343 posts)on ONE progressive media personality. ONE person the subject of this unrelenting, unforgiving, and seemingly very disproportional (yes), vitriol.
Sooooo disproportionate is your response that it seems pretty clear there is something more behind it.

(102,343 posts)WHAT IS THE AGENDA? WHAT IS THE MOTIVATION? WHAT IS THE DESIRED OUTCOME? WHAT DO YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE?
That is what we'd all like to know here. WHY?
Spider Jerusalem
(21,786 posts)I don't see much of a highly organised effort. Some random Twitter user dug up a bunch of her old blog posts that used language that can fairly be characterised as homophobic, she claimed she was hacked. Those claims do not stand up to scrutiny. I have no agenda, apart from an interest in the truth. I do not view a media personality who gets caught in something like this and then blatantly and obviously lies about it as a valuable progressive ally; defending an obvious liar is an embarrassment.

(37,648 posts)Joan Walsh noted that those posts/tweets (I assume she meant the ones she saw, and she may not have seen all of them) didn't have comments to them, while Joy's other posts/tweets did. That is an indication that they were added after the fact, esp given the controversial nature of those posts/tweets.
She also doesn't recall any stink over them or reference to them at the time, which surely there would have been, if anyone had read them.
A couple of the posts I saw were vulgar and angry and name-calling. It's not likely that someone trying to work her way up the ladder in a public arena would post things like that and expect her career to continue.
Joan Walsh also noted that if anyone had seen or objected to those posts, her employer (at that time) would have done something about it, probably.
These are red flags, at least for some of the posts/tweets.
These posts/tweets have been turned over to the FBI for investigation, which leads me to think that someone(s) genuinely have cause to think she's been hacked.
So to be fair, it's better to err on the side of caution, giving the person the benefit of the doubt, IMO. Just as I would want people to do, if it were me.
Spider Jerusalem
(21,786 posts)People didn't object, so much, to casual homophobia, at the time. (One of them was linked on DU in 2007.)
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)What matters is what a post says exactly. One may describe it one way, and another describe it another way.
The posts I saw were not mere casual statements about gays. They were bizarro, outrageous. One was cussing at Rosie O'Donnell, calling her vulgar names & fat-shaming her (when Joy Reid herself had a weight problem and has lost the weight since). It smacked right away to me of someone doing a fake post who got carried away or forgot that a normal non-Trumper wouldn't speak that way, esp someone whose business is speaking on national television.
A post such as that one would surely have generated at least one comment.
As I said...There were no comments to the ones that Joan Walsh saw, while there were comments to Joy's other posts/tweets. That's suspicious, at the least.
So there is an indication of something not being on the up and up about these. So it's only right that people withhold judgment, until they know her account wasn't hacked. Just as you would want, if it were you.
(If most or many people were walking around making anti-gay statements in the mid-2000s, I didn't catch that. But if they were, then the fact that Joy did is inconsequential, I guess. Since that was generally accepted. What is not acceptable, and has not been for many years in polite society, is disrespectful talk about minorities or gays or women, etc One can state what would now be thought of as an anti-gay or anti-female position, as an honest expression of personal belief that is common in the public at the time, and still be respectful toward people. There is a difference between that and calling people names. (Example: "I don't believe in gays getting married; a civil partnership is okay, though. "I don't believe women should be police officers. They're too physically weak."
Spider Jerusalem
(21,786 posts)That proves nothing at all.
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)What does it say? Does she want all gays to burn in hell or leave the country? What does it say?
Again...ONE TWEET is not what this is about. It's supposedly a series of them. None or most of which don't have comments. Strange.
The FBI is checking it out. If she wasn't hacked, then you can crucify her, if you want.
BTW, I don't have a horse in this race. I don't watch her show. Not a big fan. But I don't jump on bandwagons. I wait for EVIDENCE.
Spider Jerusalem
(21,786 posts)Because it IS a lie. I don't watch her show either. (I don't watch US cable news at all; I've lived in the UK for over a decade.) I wouldn't care, if she weren't lying. (And it's not a tweet, it's a blog post, I haven't seen any claims at all that her Twitter was hacked, she's cleaned that up, in recent years, but she was pretty free with casual homophobia and transphobia there, too, upon a time.)
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)I get it.
You say:

(3,522 posts)What she said was most straight people cringe at the sight of two men kissing.
That is worlds apart from saying it is normal to be grossed out by two men kissing. What she said is more of a criticism of most straight people. And it is a true statement. I see it all the time. There are plenty of straight people who cant deal with the sight of two men kissing.
So while you do not directly attribute the quote to her, it is clear that you are implying that she said it. And while it is somewhat similar to a quote she made, it had been fundamentally, and deliberately, changed.

(37,648 posts)Not all of them, probably. But the worst ones I saw seem to be fake to me. Totally out of character, just out of the blue, she posts a vulgar, cuss-filled post about Rosie O'Donnel being fat? Doesn't make sense...for one, Joy has had a weight problem herself and lost the weight. Someone who is trying to raise her profile in the public world isn't likely to go off with vulgarity & offensiveness like that.
And as Joan Walsh said, she noticed that Joy typically had comments to her tweets. But the offensive ones being quoted now....don't have comments.
And despite offensive tweets, no one made a big deal out of it at the time? And no one remembered the tweets...until now?
All this is a red flag.
Add to that, that it's been turned over to the FBI, lends credence to this being a hack job. Why Joy, I don't know. She's not a big star at MSNBC. But maybe because she's NOT that big a star, some group thought they could pick her off easily.
Imagine if it were you. That's how I view it. What would I want people to do, if it were me.
