Trump administration prepares to unravel Obama-era fuel-efficiency rules for automobiles
By Washington Post Staff April 27 at 5:24 PM
The draft proposal would freeze fuel-efficiency requirements at 2020 levels until 2026, scrapping current rules that would raise the standards repeatedly in the coming decade. A Senate official who has reviewed the draft document described it in detail to The Washington Post.
The plan, which is not final, would also challenge Californias ability to set its own vehicle efficiency standards. The states higher standards have led automakers to build more fuel-efficient automobiles to maintain access to Californias massive market.
Fuel-efficiency standards push automakers to produce and sell more vehicles that use less gasoline, an effort to reduce conventional air pollution and greenhouse-gas emissions. The Obama-era plan aimed to raise the average fuel economy of American automobiles to more than 50 miles per gallon by 2025.
This is a developing story. It will be updated.
