Officials with the U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said the increased activity is associated with the collapse of the crater floor at Puu Oo, which is an open vent below Kilauea's summit crater and lava lake.
There were about 50 small quakes detected in the area on Wednesday morning alone.
Scientists say the activity could trigger a new eruption and people are being told to stay away. USGS is sending two ground crews into the area Wednesday to install new monitoring equipment.
Puu Oo's 1983 eruption resulted in lava fountains soaring over 1,500 feet high. In the decades since, the lava flow has buried dozens of square miles (kilometers) of land and destroyed many homes. In 2008, after a series of small earthquakes, Kilauea's summit crater opened and gushed lava and rock over 75 acres (30.35 hectares) of the mountain, damaging a nearby visitor overlook.

(54,403 posts)I walked over cooled lava flow, strode by the tips of no parking signs, now ankle high.
We walked about an hour and a half in the dark, sometimes punching through where the cooling lava had caused a bubble, and arrived at a ridge where we could watch the lava flowing into the sea, where the water rose up as hills of angry glowing steam where the molten lava flowed off into it. We just sat and stared until our water gave out. It's a sight you never forget.

Hawaii's Kilauea volcano erupted Thursday, releasing lava into a residential neighborhood and prompting mandatory evacuation orders for nearby homes.
Hawaii County said steam and lava poured out of a crack in Leilani Estates, which is near the town of Pahoa on the Big Island.
Footage shown on local television showed lava spurting into the sky from a crack in a road.
